As a person who still marvels at how AMAZINGLY clever MID-SIDE is for so many different things, I'm thrilled about the Spacial Maximizer!!

I'm actually kind of hyper-ventilating right now, so I'm going to have to go breath into a paper sack for a minute. :headbang:

I use mid-side for a lot of things, but it never even occurred to me that you might be able to simulate it with a plugin. What a great idea! I can't wait to see if it really works! (I'm sure it does)

You've always been able to build this with two 'mid-side' plugs in series, it's just required building out a set of busses and plugs to get it done. You still have to do this if you want to use different dynamics or EQ.

No no no! Now we have to back and edit 21,375 posts about the PDF manual.

Will there still be the printed manual?

Thanks.

There are two main applications of MID-SIDE.

One is the microphone configuration- which literally has a front-facing capsule and a figure 8 side capsule. It produces a matrixed signal that needs to be de-matrixed in the mixer. MID panned center, and two copies of the SIDE, one side is phase inverted, and they are panned hard left/right. The result is a very nice stereo field. In mono, the side channel is simply cancelled so that only the MID is heard.

The other application is to take existing stereo and reverse the process (matrix it), so that all material that is common to both channels is MID and all of the material that is off-center (i.e., the difference, L-R) goes to the SIDE channel. Re-matrixing puts all the stereo field back where it was. The ability to process the matrixed signal allows you to do things like widen, or compress or EQ only the sides or only the middle.

I'm not explaining it very well.

Wait a minute... if we get a PDF manual what will MOTU use for copy protection now? Maybe we should start an "I hate the iLok on DP thread?"
