To the OP:

I used to license software for a living. Now I do something similar but with music. In any case, I am quite familiar with certain issues to the point that I am an expert. Copyright is one of them.

You may have bought a copy of a program but you did not buy the program. It's the same as buying a CD: you do not own the music, only a license granted to you to listen to that copy.

MOTU owns DP 3. If they allow a transfer of that license to you, only then do you have the right to use the software. MOTU has the right to allow or deny this and can set the terms for the transfer (free or paid) if they do allow this. The fact that many companies do allow this doesn't mean that MOTU has to. One would hope that, if you are charged anything above a nominal paperwork fee, that you would get some level of support - even if it is access to the Support pages on the web site. Again, it is up to them and the opinion of no one on this board counts in that regard.

James, as owner of this forum, can allow you to participate, kick you off and/or give you some grace time to get legal.

Now about your rants: I can't tell if you are a 6 year old not wanting to try a new food or the drunk in the corner whining that the world was better when bread was 20 cents a loaf and Ike was president.

No one really cares why you prefer OS 9. Really - no one. And your admonition that you be left alone on the subject? No one is going to heed that, either- especially when you keep bringing it up.

There's nothing wrong with using old stuff whether it's analog or OS 9. It can be fun and educational. If some hobbyist wanted my 238S (8 channel cassette) deck to learn multitrack recording, I'd turn him/her on to it and spend time showing how it worked. Likewise, I'm glad to give help with general recording and DP 3 / OS 9 when I think I might know the answer (for example, querying about the stable version - there was only one).

Many of us are working professionals - even us part timers. OS 9, Syncassette decks, Dokorders, Porta-Studios (analog) etc. are not pro level tools.

So quit your whining and we'll all get along just fine. The fact is the newer stuff is better and we're going to tell you that when we think the suggestion is warranted - whether you like it or not.

Wow, that can apply to sooooo many posts. As for me and legacy products, I'm using a piano that was essentially designed in the mid 1700's and a body that was designed maybe 4,000,000 years ago - give or take a few generational adaptations and some natural (and unnatural) selections. Heck, I still drive a 1994 Ford Ranger! Who the what?!

I believe we have already lost our OMS (or FreeMIDI) fan and, in terms of what this place is about, that equates to no loss whatsoever - for us. But getting back to his question:

If you are looking for a knowledgable, vibrant, and brutally honest community of musicians and engineers to bounce stuff off of, yeah, this is the place, IMO. You might also try Gearslutz, but mind the trolls!

One final thought...

NO SOUP FOR YOU!

Hey, my basement is where analog gear goes into hibernation, never to be seen again. I shudder to think what might and might not still work. Components don't need to be used to go bad over time.

I threw out my perfectly good Mac SE last year. My G3 iMacs are next... Around my house, that is considered progress - as long as I don't touch my wife's electric typewriter. One never knows...
