Now I'm spoiled and want a full screen DP & Finale. This is one cool OS.

All the utility does is set the kernel startup mode. It doesn't run at startup and doesn't do anything different than setting the kernel in the terminal program.

Michael, glad you made the transition after all your apprehension. I have a few things that might not work on M/L and I have just this year upgraded a lot of things to 10.6.8 after my old PPC G5 finally died earlier this year. This expired most of my upgrade money, but I did get DP8. Can't afford Altiverb 7 yet, still on 6.
What bothers me is the mention of the Firmware update install some have posted. And if M/L is a problem here I would like to be able to go back to 10.6.8 and have it work as it does now. A serious Mac Tech told me a Firmware update changes the hardware of your Mac, not a HD or part of the OS. AND once you change the Firmware, it is not reversible. I have 2 Partitions on my main drive with S/L and Lion. I use S/L almost exclusively. I did see a Firmware update available at Apple but did not do it. I was going to try the upgrade to M/L on an external drive as MIDI Life did too.
So, does anyone know if the Firmware Update with M/L is automatic with the install ? I think it may be machine specific. And, some have posted no problems running multiple OS versions like S/L and M/L.
Timeline scared me with his post: " 10.8.1 changes your machines firmware making a second drive with Snow Leopard dodgy as hell. The firmware update makes apps in SL incompatible. "
Anyone have any other experience or thoughts on this? Mike H.?

Once I moved to ML I never again went back to SL. I was wrong about the GUI and there are so many improvements and enhancements I would not do without now - not the least of which is full screen mode and Launch Pad.

Heck, I even use iCloud for some stuff but please don't tell Shooshie. I'd hate to have to apologize for earlier poor judgment on my part.

Michael, thanks for your input, I figured you did not go back to S/L. There are just a few programs that may not work for me in 10.8 so I wanted a safety net.

Has anyone else had success running 10.6.8 on their machine after upgrading to 10.8? That Firmware thing has me wondering.

There is no problem. The original OS restoration disk should always work. I had an issue while chasing some (non-Apple) problems and decided to reinstall 10.6. The 10.6.0 and 10.6.8 commercial CDs would not work so I had Apple send me a copy of the 10.6.4 restoration DVD for 2010-2011 iMacs and it worked. Restoring my files from Time Machine helped me ID the problems.

If you are under AppleCare, they will send you the disk for free.

Thanks Mike, I already had Apple Care send me the original restore disks for my machine a while back.

But.... any thought on Timeline's post from page 1 in this thread? He stated after the M/L instal, his firmware was changed and then S/L was not running well. ( from another partition I believe )

Quote / Timeline : "10.8.1 changes your machines firmware making a second drive with Snow Leopard dodgy as hell. The firmware update makes apps in SL incompatible. I found you can load SL but only on a completely clean drive. You can migrate the files from ML but if you try and upgrade the SL drive to 10.5.8 upgrade from apple, it will hit 34% download and crash, IN THE DOWNLOAD FROM APPLE. Very strange indeed. My computer runs out of Apple care on Monday so I have a report out to extend this issue through this month but if the firmware issue halts my use of Snow Leopard in 10.6.8. "

I was concerned that a permanent Firmware update might not be reversible and that would affect S/L after you instal M/L. No matter how you tried to revert, main drive or external boot, etc. Or do I have this all wrong? And, would you know, How does S/L run after M/L instal? Is it OK? I was thinking of Installing M/L on an external Boot Drive and keeping S/L 'safe' on my main Internal.

Appreciate your input always, thanks.

I have no idea what Timeline's real problems were but, since he posted that the restore disk would only work on a clean drive, I had to come to the conclusion that he didn't know what his problems were either. As you could see, most of them were fixed. I would think that 10.8.2 got the rest.

You are worrying about someone else's issues without knowing what they are.

>10.8.1 changes your machines firmware making a second drive with Snow Leopard dodgy as hell.<

I have a second drive with 10.6.8 via eSATA that I use for testing. I have absolutely no problem booting my machine with it. None, zip, zero... That's the drive I created with my system restore, then updated to 10.6.8. I've used it for testing HP printer and DP issues. When I am not booted from it, it works perfectly fine as a host drive for my sound files for Mach 5. I also use it to host DiskWarrior and TechToolPro.

I have other test drives formatted 10.7.5 and 10.8.0. When I was having OS issues, I wanted to make sure that I was having the problems with clean copies of the OS so Apple couldn't blame anything else. Now that Preview works correctly in 10.8.2, I will use these drives for something else - someday. I take care of a lot of Macs. Having a few low capacity HDs around is an occupational hazard for me.

You are correct, the Rabbit brain is easily confused. You clearly answered my question here.

Thanks for your reply.
