Done.

Snagged a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP at Guitar Center Hollywood this afternoon. Exactly what I wanted and little bit more. Free Bass Station VI included and an intro level to Ableton with an upgrade path. I'll look at it but DP is a permanent fixture for me.

Plug and play. The CD installer even requested to download the latest drivers, saving me from installing and updating later. The control software is excellent. Smooth. Easy, Flexible. Not only can you attenuate the Mac audio, but apparently various routings, which is really cool. Some very nice unexpected features, like adding reverb temporarily to the mix (with separate channel controls), Gate, EQ, Compression, and the odd but very useful ability to hear the mix in different listening conditions, such as from a TV speaker, bedroom clock radio, home theater, various studio speakers, and a bunch of other options. Doesn't sound like much, but very useful when writing for TV and wanting to know what you're going to sound like on NPR at 6:00 AM on a Bose Waveradio.

I have to see what all that means and how to make all that work but that's what long weekends are for. :) That and high heels - apparently.

Thank you one and all for your input and suggestions.

Plus I like the onboard compressor, which I use permanently set to a light (3:1 or so) compression ratio on every vocal I record. The onboard reverb is also fine for monitoring reverb on vocals etc. These days I've finally gotten use to mixing In The Box, so I don' t really mix on it per se. But I like it fine as a front end. The main reason I got it over a Yamaha Onyx was its ability to do 8 in and 8 out, but if you need 16 there's the n16.
May I ask what software you are using to monitor the device? Does Yamaha provide a good app or is Cuemix what you use? Or something else?

Actually I monitor through the mixer. It not only has 8 separate returns, but a return marked DAW to ST, which is what I use for the return of almost everything but click or something that I want separately. But it seems this is irrelevant now that you got the Saffire. Good luck.

UPDATE.

TOS Link from Mac to Saffire works great piping all Mac apps except DP to that. DP via Firewire to Saffire.

Now I don't have to adjust volumes as the Saffire software allows me to set the FW and TOS Link separately into a single mix out to my mains.

But wait! There's more. I can also route the Mac signal directly to DP. No more Hijack Pro needed (for that at any rate). It also means that realtime bounce to disk in DP that will include Plogue Bidule, Quicktime, or any other Mac program running. This is really cool for sound design. I can try sounds with the sequence in DP running before bringing them in to DP or just hit record in DP and not import anything from files.

Thanks again for all your help(s). I'm ready for work... just in time!

I once tried a Saffire and although it was listed as being able to work in standalone, it cut sound when I pulled the FW cable...
That was when they came out earlier...

Regardless of what you've heard, pulling a live FireWire cable is not a good idea in any circumstances. The Saffire is really awesome but I am equally impressed with the software. Top notch!

OK
I didn't pull the FW cable, just shut the computer off

Is it still working standalone ? If yes, they fixed it...

Best

I realized that after I posted. I haven't tried standalone yet but will try to do so when I get a break. Thanks for the heads up.
