FWIW, I find it a waste of time to convert my entire SFX CD library to a sampler. I import them all into CDpedia (catalogue program). It gets all the track names on every commercial CD I've ever loaded. Those magically get updated (CDDB?) in the Finder. Then I drag the whole disc to a HD folder and they're inventoried and searchable by name or by browsing.

If I need a sound, I can search for it. I have about 200GB of pro [licensed] SFX currently. Putting them all in M5 would be overkill. I use Snapper to extract exactly what I want, or just pull the whole track. Often I bypass M5 and process the noise in DP as a track, but it's also easy to drop the samples in M5 if I want more processing.

I have no issues with M5-2 but cal always use fresh sounds and instruments and new ways to mess them up.

Finally!!! I've found Mach V ver 2 quite clunky....especially with non-Mach V formatted sounds...Looks like they fixed a lot of the issues! I ordered mine today!! :D

I get tired of having to open a disk image every time I want to access a file. I certainly hope THAT has changed....

No, but my credit card was billed, so I am assuming it has shipped. Supposedly 4 day shipping from MA which would put it at next Thur if it ships today or Fri if they wait to Monday to get it on a UPS truck.

What a bunch of geeks we are! :) Maybe not, just kids waiting for that shiny new toy that makes lots of odd sounds ... careful not to spill that beer, dear.

Yes, that was one of the worst design flaws I've seen. Damn, that was annoying.

Yes, I really want M5v3! But I also want that white Hagstroem bass... But M5 has sampled bass... and is cheaper... hmmm... Oh, I forgot, I'm broke so I can't either anyway :shake:

Let's hope it is not still annoying.

Hmmm. Just right-click on the disk image and add to favorites. It then stays open or mounted. It's in the manual.

Perhaps, but I don't like the idea that I have to keep a DMG "open" on my machine. Frankly, it's a stupid design, both IMO and in the O of Others... :)

No support for my extensive library of Mirage samples? It is completely worthless. :mumble:

Maybe not. I've no love for Kontakt (or NI for that matter, miserable product discontinuing product bait and switching ugly UI building noncompliant audio unit implementing weasels that they are).

If it were capable of matching K5 (K5 is just out, they'd better equal it or they should have waited a wee bit) and running its stuff I'd write a check right now.

So I'll probably upgrade but I'm waiting to see if it can really run K5 stuff.

I have been looking at Omnisphere for quite some time. How does MachFive 3 compare with Omnisphere? They are both about the same price. Which would be the most bang for the buck?
What are the basic differences between them?

Totally different animals:

Omnisphere is a synthesizer based on samples. You can only use its internal sounds (well, "only" is a bit misleading, there are thousands.) You can not load sounds other than Omnisphere presets into it, and you can't use your own samples as basis for its synthesis. It really is more a synthesizer that occasionally feels like a sampler (i.e. when you load a real string preset into it.)

MachFive is a sampler with some synthesis capability (looks like that's quite expanded in v3). You can open libraries in the native MachFive and UVI formats directly, plus it reads a bunch of other formats (how well remains to be seen, it used to depend on how deeply they're scripted.) You can also (very easily) create your own sample instruments from scratch. It can do pretty advanced sound design (especially this new version, as it appears.) MachFive's "direct" competition isn't Omnisphere or similar sample-based synths, but Kontakt, which is similar in functionality.

So re. Omnisphere or MachFive, it really depends on what you want to have - a synth or a sampler.
