Hey, no problem. This forum has taught me plenty, it's nice to return the favor. You know, what goes around, comes around. Best karma on the internet.
You can learn a lot from these guys just hanging out. I usually click on the 'view new posts' link at the bottom of the index page and scope out the threads that sound interesting or that I think I might know something about.
Glad I was able to help.

The architecture of the Mac/8pre is such that you can only use one at a time as your audio in/out. So, audio in through the 8pre, best to listen to the playback on it.
It is possible to do what you want. What needs to happen is that you have to switch both the inputs and outputs to internal to get playback without an 8pre installed. Switching the outputs only won't do the trick.
Took me a while to figure that out many years ago. I keep hoping it would change as it would be more convenient - but no...

Is this just with the 8pre? Mine is first in the FW chain since my MBP doesn't recognize my 828mk2 and with no hardware connected DP defaults to built-in ins and outs. That seems a bit odd.
Thanks for chiming in Mike.

MOTU replied to my question today and said that it is only possible for playback to be heard with the hardware connected and installed.

That's correct-- Audiodesk is a pared down version of Digital Performer that's bundled with its audio interfaces. It's an incentive to buy their hardware, as it's considerably superior to Garageband, Audacity and many other low-end DAW's out there. Making it so that it can only be used in conjunction with their hardware is an incentive to buy DP, which is considerably superior to Audiodesk.
