Neither VCC nor any other plugin can change the relation of the mixbus to clipping at 0.
Plugins like VCC and Nebula3 cannot and do not add headroom (they don't need to; there's already an excessive supply of it). They add coloration, one form of which is saturation. Saturation is one way to deal with amplitude spikes to yield a louder and/or more harmonically rich track. Other plugs (including Slate FGX and URS Saturation, among others) have used saturation of various types to increase apparent loudness.

Pulling down the master fader is a full-precision way to reduce the gain to accommodate a 24 bit fixed point mixdown. That has nothing to do with the presence or absence of pleasant analog saturation, which is what these plugins provide, among other things.

SS or Fabrice can correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know there's no way to literally change the summing math in DP. DP's summing math is what it is, and can't be circumvented. What plugs like VCC and Nebula3 do is the next best thing, which is to condition the individual tracks at their source with a first plugin and then the DP-summed mix at the mixbus with a second plugin, so that the personality of the console can be approximated if not precisely modeled.

These plugs sound great and definitely improve ITB mixing. But they don't change the laws of physics or DP's summing math. Digital zero is what it is, which is fine since it's no more of a limitation than it ever was.
Friend, thank you for the clarification...really.

Now, I will get back to the duties of orchestral arranging, vocal editing, songwriting, EQ automating, drum sub-mixing, guitar multiband compressing, level riding, background vocal part writing, live production sound mixing, VI updating, everything rebooting, forum checking, client meeting, schedule making, phone answering, vocal mic-ing, mastering, popcorn making, bathroom cleaning, studio vacuuming, three year old playing, fishing, lawn mowing (hopefully soon), and anything else that come before pitching Lawn Darts at software developers. (Not much time for that, no offense if that's your bag, baby.)

Oh to hear it now..."Too much time on my hands..."

Right, you cannot change the summing math in DP or any daw via a plugin.. my point was that rather than transparently flow past digital zero.. the VCC mixbuss's modeled amplifiers will start to saturate and clip and you'll hear what sounds like an analog reproduction of console breakup.

Hey Steven, I only skimmed through the manual because I'm on a hard deadline right now, so for give me if it explains, but..

If I want the console sound to be clean, i.e. without breakup (but still big, deep, wide, etc.) how should I adjust the input levels on the channels? I record most everything around -12dB. I don't want to overdrive the channel or the buss with the particular music I'm mixing now (soundtrack/trailer stuff). Since the channel plug is on an insert, it gets it's level from the recorded track, pre-fader. I don't want to have to use the trim plugin first on every channel, so is there any advice you can give me?

OTOH, the master buss plugin is affected by fader levels, obviously. When I'm ITB, I usually try to get that reasonably high, without getting overs of course, so do I need to bring that down? .. I dunno, it just didn't occur to me that I might have to re-think the gain-staging in the DAW- I thought I'd just click a button and have instant SSL/Neve.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.. of course, I should :rtfm: completely first, I know that.

EDIT: I would have posted this on your forum, but I tried to register yesterday, and couldn't get it to work.

Anyone having any luck with VCC and DP7.22? I tried the v1.05 update, and there is no change in DP, all the same problems, and now the PT version crashes on startup.

wearily,

Stephen

Hey Stephen that sucks. I did read that there would be a CPU improvement with this new release, but I haven't checked it out yet, will do that tomorrow.

If it is broken with PT, that's not good news for us DP users I suspect.. we will be further back on the list. I hate not having the group function..

I was about to buy VCC, but it sounds like it needs some major beta testing.
If it really performed as advertised, it would be a great tool.
I hope all of the kinks can be worked out.
I think it is a great idea and I would love to have a truly functional version.
All is well

Mixing an album now. The CPU hit with this plugin is profound, brings my 12-core to it's knees. The sound is fantastic for sure, but I have to say, I'm very disappointed with the performance otherwise.

I don't know if I can get through my deadline with this, I may have to bail.. :shake:

Bummer. Sorry to hear that. Thanks for being one of the brave ones. I was interested but not any more. I'll have to wait, and even then I'm not sure. One would have hoped they would have had it better together than this. I give them credit for being innovative and pushing the boundaries, but I've been reading up on all the issues with this plug and it's hard not to conclude that it's been released too soon. When I pay for something I expect it to be pre-tested and to work (though I understand a glitch here or there on different system configurations).

Too bad.

Yes, quality plugs for sure, but a bit slow on bugs fixes. FG-X is my go to mastering plug, but it's been out for a while now (?) and the control stealing bug has still not been addressed...

Just curious: How many tracks? Buffer? Pre-rendering on?

I'm just completing mixing an album here too. I was hoping to pull in VCC at the last moment for a bit of oomph and sparkle, and I want to try it on the 8 subgroups I am mixing through, rather like when I sum through a mixer.

I am able to open an instance on each sub and one on the mixbuss, set them and then close them. The problem is that that is as far as I can get for the moment in DP, the moment I try to open a plugin again it crashes. And I really want to be able to try all the different settings.

What I could try, which would be a real pain the bum, is to print my subgroups, and then open them up in ProTools where I know I can get VCC channels to group and I can reopen the plugins. I just want to put VCC through it's paces and check all the options. But I may run out of time for this album, which would be a shame, because it's a great album.

Only 10 stereo tracks and 3 mono tracks on the mix I did this morning. Don't ever have pre-render on, realtime always. My buffer was on 256. I couldn't increase it because on this track I was using outboard FX with the "Latency Fixer" plugin. If I increase the buffer, I would have to go in there and recalibrate the latency of each hardware box (by hand), and I don't have the time today- although I may end up doing that anyway.

Someone told me to check the oversampling setting of the plug, but I can't get to the preferences without crashing.
