Re: How many folks are using DP Mixerless?
Thanks for all the replies!
I'm honestly amazed that the majority seems to be mixerless.
Like James said, though, when I'm not tracking the Mackie was just used for controlling monitor levels.
So I've done a little early experimenting and managed to get the studio monitors functional (powered Genelecs). I definitely would need some kind of volume control between the output of one of the interfaces and the Genelecs.
I believe I understand how to route an external Lexicon PCM 70 to give a vocalist, etc. just a touch of 'verb while tracking (not recorded, just for their performance "comfort").
The one thing I'm not clear with yet regarding ITB, is how to split the signal to feed a headphone distribution amp. I'd like for the headphones to be exactly what I'm hearing through the studio monitors, and I certainly don't want to to do the cheap Y cord thing. (this is only for tracking).
I'll continue reading and thinking about this. I could probably set up a 2nd pair of outputs, but I'd rather keep it where the headphones are following the master. Maybe create sends on each channel to drive the headphone amp...still thinking.
CueMix is still very confusing to me, since I've never used it, and the PCI 424 manual I have is a bit dated...all the screenshots are from OS9. Maybe the reprint has a bit more intuitive instructions, or perhaps I just need to dig into it a bit more.
Just early morning thoughts and thanks...

Hi Buzzy: I'm going through the same here.
I'm thinking of starting out with a Mackie Big Knob.
Mainly because I use 2 sets of monitors but there a allot of other routing
possibilities with it as well.

Had a dog in the '80s that did that to a lexicon delay once as he snuck in friends and marked their territory on my rack just missing two UA tube limiters. Whew! I called Lexicon. They were on the floor laughing out loud as it was a first and replaced it for free. I was lucky.
Still, cool cat.

Re: How many folks are using DP Mixerless?
I have gone the calibrated monitor route. I installed the necessary resistors (metal film for low noise) in the XLR connectors of the cabling. It's a simple matter of building a voltage divider with the appropriate resistors. If you are an EE you already know what to do. If not, perhaps you know someone who could help. It's about four bucks worth of components and a little know-how. Now that I've been using calibrated monitors for mixing for a while, I never want to go back.buzzsmith wrote:I definitely would need some kind of volume control between the output of one of the interfaces and the Genelecs.

Re: How many folks are using DP Mixerless?
I use an Apogee Duet and API lunchbox for input, and mix ITB. I make bedroom rock, postrock and electronica. I've got an old SAC 2k2 which I should probably unload as I don't really use it anymore. OTOH, faders would probably be good if I was doing some kind of improvised dubby thing. But that's a big IF for now.

This is something I haven't thought through yet.buzzsmith wrote:

Is this a Cuemix function?

I'm going to try this in a few hours, so I'll get back to you.
I don't think it involves CueMix.

Re: How many folks are using DP Mixerless?
I've been thinking of getting rid of my mixer too. Its main use now is monitoring during mixing, but some cue for tracking, and other duties. But some pots are starting to crackle.
I checked out the 424PCI manual, and it doens't have any info on how to use Cue Mix at all? What am I missing, anything in DP manual? Actual Cue Mix ws in BUSS 5. Whats up with that? Guess I'll need to play around with it some more.
Currently using a M-patch 2 for monitoring as it has 2 inputs and 2 outputs. But it seems dumbing down after the DA-10.
BigKnob seems like its cool, but I've heard it was noisy.

The reason I'm leaning towards the BN is because it looks like there's more routing options.
I've looked at it in the store and its well built.
