Sure thing, Bob. Yep-- that was Song and Record of the Year in 1980. For as unusual as the chord changes are, people just couldn't get that tune out of their heads-- even that "three blind mice" accompaniment could be heard in grocery stores from people whistling it unconsciously.
The lyrics were especially out of the ordinary for the way it told a story. That was Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald in a great songwriting collaboration.
"What seems to be is always better than nothing
[when] there's nothing at all..."

The complete lyrics (damn great writing!):
Michael Mcdonald/Kenny Loggins
He came from somewhere back in her long ago
The sentimental fool dont see
Tryin' hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life
She musters a smile
For his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
Only to realize
It never really was
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him...
Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe theres a place in her life
Someday, somewhere, she will return
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go
But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
Theres nothing at all
But what a fool believes he sees...

What blows me away is the rhyming scheme!

Love this transition:
And nothing at all keeps sending him...
Somewhere back in her long ago

nice topic
i am in chicago for lolllapalooza - hot muggy.
i feel like it would be wrong of MOTU to charge for an update - but i agree they have to pay for R&D.
I never use 6x - i like the audio portion though
i would probably pay for an upgrade.
i too go way back - can't remember the version - it was 1990 there was no digital then.
writing music has become so much more tedious and agonizing a process. i realize how much more i ask of the computer and so whatever....
