Stepchild? You mean Stepfather! DP was a front end for the Audiomedia HD recording system that matched Performer's MIDI prowess with Digidesign's audio. It continued to do that until MOTU decided that Macs were fast enough to do audio without all that gear. So, DP began in earnest with 2 tracks, then 4 tracks, then 8, then unlimited except by RAM. So, Digi was the audio portion of "Digital Performer" until the MAS audio system was born. It's been a long, strange relationship, but Digi is the dad.
