Just posting this lest people get the wrong idea about these truly excellent Camel Audio products...

Kind regards.

I'm sure they're great products. I'm just not sure one should install them while a file is open. And it may have been unrelated. The timing was right; that's all.

I think they have to be unrelated.

When you install plugins, all that happens is those .component files get put in the /Library/Audio/Plugins/AU area. I very highly doubt that DP is looking for anything else in that locations while it i running. I have installed MANY plugins with a host still going, it's just that to see the plugin I have to restart so DP can look and see if there is anything new. THEN, DP is aware of the plugin.

Not to say that something else that software installed didn't break something elsewhere, however, I do not believe it was the plugins specifically. Especially given the fact that NOTHING in your save file would have any relevance to plugins not seen by DP in the first place. DP doesn't know about them at that point.

That's just my opinion in this case :)

Good point, Grimey.

DP appears to load them all into RAM when first fired up, and doesn't even seem to look there when loading new projects; the audio system is then in place anyway, so this makes sense.
DP does continually reference the Presets folder whenever necessary though, as is evidenced by its prompt updating of preset lists whenever changes are made to it, even from within the Finder.

Magic Dave to the rescue!

I have to say that Magic Dave was a top reason that I purchased DP, along with a recommendation from a respected fellow. I forget how our paths crossed, all I know is he was the most helpful person I've come across in the DAW world. MOTU should be proud...

Thankfully, the Magic Dave is a real guy, separate from Frodo and Shooshie. Now... whether Shooshie and Frodo are the same person is a question to ponder. ;)

PS: Magic Dave's real name is the same as my brother's name!

I've pondered it much, and have concluded that you're different but complimentary aspects of the same being. :D

Another Shood-verified he-man, no doubt.

Sorry. I don't know what came over me immediately after the blue bolt of lightning directed at my head by Dr. Evil from his volcano lookout found its target. :D

Ive been diligently following this thread, but Im not sure if anyone has determined the source of the problem with any certainty? If I lose any more files to this bug, I may lose the job I'm on as well!

Just keep excellent backups. No, the reason for the error was never determined. Nor did we determine whether it was an audio file or a plugin. Dave took my corrupted file and returned it to me in two forms: one sans audio, and the other sans plugins. Theoretically one should have opened and the other not. In fact, they both opened.

I'm wondering if it's a problem that Leopard has with Firewire drives. I've moved all my working files to an internal SATA. We'll see if it happens again. Just for our info, on what sort of drives has this happened to you?

Has it actually occurred on more than one drive? If so, were they different types? Could drive age be a factor? The drive on which mine resided at the time of the error was an older drive that is always in use. Could it be just... tired? Might Leopard require drives to be perky and fresh? :D Honestly, I am clueless. "Perky" has about as much meaning to me now as "optimized" or "defragmented" at least in context of this disk-error 103.

Well, you have to ask yourself, "how many UNation members have actually seen Frodo and Shooshie in the same place at the same time?" None? Well... there you go. {cue theremin}
