I get why DAWs are single platform. They're really complicated and end up being tightly intertwined with the OS at a low level. Plugs and VIs, OTOH, are really standalone programs with well defined higher level interfaces. They can be done cross platform easily.
I did a little digging and found that TruePianos - everybody's fav ultralight piano - is built on a free framework called JUCE http://www.rawmaterialsoftware.com/juce/. Notice that it abstracts Graphics, MIDI and Audio interfaces on both PCs and Macs. That's pretty much all you need when building a VI.
And so I end up asking myself - "self, why doesn't MOTU make use of this to make their VI's cross platform and increase their revenue base?"
I have no answer.
