One point must be made: Tiger is waaaay better than Panther. Although I had no reference on my Quad G5 because it arrived with 10.4 installed, when I updated my iBook G4s to 10.4, the machines' performance was significantly enhanced, perhaps most noticeably as dramatically reduced start-up time. So, although I fully concur with Frodo's sentiments re: Orphan Tiger, (especially since I strive to avoid the early adopter's water torture) I still believe our current OS to be an outstanding software creation. OSX4X is working very nicely on all my Macs!

True. From the first version of Tiger, audio performance was much improved. For me, it was around 10.4.6- 10.4.8 where performace was best with the latest versions of DP. For PPC, Tiger is a wonderfully mature OS. For Intel, it feels a *little* greener as Universal Binary thises-and-thats are added on to allow for greater compatibility.

I suspect that the same will be true on all counts with Leopard-- that it will sooner or later be far superior to Tiger as well as the fact that it could feel a little wet behind the ears at first.

Another encouraging thought, though: Leopard will genuinely have the needs of the Intel user more firmly in mind from its first incarnation. This is not to the exclusion of PPC functionality, but Leopard will level the playing field in a different way for both chips, imho.

I may spend some time this weekend putting X4X on my laptop just to see how things go. 10.4.9 is doing quite well at the moment on a PB G4 1.5. In fact, my PB G4 has become the least troublesome computer of 5 to work with. I'd rather use my PB for testing before attempting anything on my studio towers.

Maybe it is because my laptops see such light use... email, browsing, slide shows on the plasma, a little very light recording and not much else, I have had absolutely no trouble at all with the G4 - X4X combination. On the other hand, we who push our powerhouse machines to the brink will always manage to find the weakest link! Stay cool and have a great weekend.

Well, Apple released another build of 10.4.11 tonight. Coded (8S2146), it comes less than a week after (8S2144), which was released on Thursday.

It suddenly has become more interesting to see if they decide *not* to release 10.4.11. Hmm.

Anyone brave enough to take the plunge?

There's Sir Markus the Brave-us at the helm once again! I'll be eagerly awaiting your reports.

Dude-- I even chickened out of the X4X experiment over the weekend.

Dwarves? Rivals? Never. Friends, always.

Sounds like your system is a lot more complicated than mine... so I don't blame you for giving it more thought. I'll move my "everything except DP" partition to XI first. I am on a quest for the best possible OS in the .4 realm, as I do not plan to venture from this hallowed ground into the Tiger's lair anytime soon.

So you see, I am actually, kind sir, the ultimate chicken!

The X4X experiment was supposed to be on my laptpop-- and I simply use built-in with no VIs other than GM sounds. That's how much of a Frayed E. Cat I've been about it. My laptop has been nothing but rock solid since I got it in January, 2005.

If the ultimate chicken is Super Chicken, I guess that makes me a clone, using SuperDuper, of course! Bottom line, if it works... bawk, baw- bawk!
