I have no doubt Motu has a much more accurate idea of their user demographic. Their marketing department is very savvy. A few respondents on the MOTU UBB is not an accurate sample base any way. Even so I doubt seriously whether they'd change their strategy. The DAW world is a VI/Audio/MIDI one. And unless DP wants to lose more of it's market share it's got to remain competetive. And that means it's got to offer at least as much and hopefully more than Logic, Nuendo etc.. Even if user don't presently use VIs nobody wants to buy something where they can't. Their mind might change.
Couldn't agree more.

I think the seeming "predominant audio" thing here has more to say about the old-schoolers that frequent Unicornation than anything else. Rare to see, say, a trip-hop or crunk reference here.

I have this non-scientific theory that posters here tend to fall into three categories: old, old, and don't-even-ask-how-old. And their tastes and practices align accordingly.

Not that I'm an ageist. I fall somewhere between old and old. But I know most young whippersnappers love them some MIDI -- and that's a big hunk of the consumer pie.

Me, I like mixing both worlds together.
50% / 50% VI. I don't even like calling it "MIDI" anymore.
Same here. A guitar and a VI are just tools to me.
I'm actually about to move back into more DP for programming with Mach 5. Reason is not exactly friendly to music with meter/tempo changes.
One of its shortcomings, to be sure. Love that app though.

Since I want MOTU to continue to optimize DP for VIs I was thinking the opposite. However, the thread could easily be taken the other way and demonstrate the need for MOTU to be more aggressive in catering to whomever is buying all these VIs. If this unscientific poll is any indication, it's not DP users.

Unfortunately Logic is the VI users app of choice these days and it should not be so. Other than DP turning to sludge whenever it even smells a VI there's really no reason it shouldn't attract more VI users. It's MIDI implementation is easily the best in the business imo.

Why... in my day...

Er... I mean - d00d! DP is teh R0x0r!

I guess I would say I do a 55/45 Audio to MIDI ratio. I would say 50/50, but I don't MIDI up my vocals or guitar.

Yet.

I record 2-8 tracks of live audio to be mixed down as bootlegs for a handful of local bands. My MIDI experience is completely experimental.

Bass player by formation, studio engineer, but mostly live engineer.

Well, I write in MIDI, using Gigastudio and VI's, which takes up the bulk of the time. Then I record and mix. So I'd say i'm 75% MIDI, 25% audio.

And Chrispick, you should know better than to call a woman 'old'. ;)

I also venture that the subject line appealed to those who do mostly audio, and few who do mostly MIDI. If DP stops developing MIDI functionality, I"ll have to stop using DP. I can't fit a live orchestra in my project sized studio.

I guess my expectations are low, or I'm just lucky.
I'm pretty happy with the results I get from DP in te VI
department.

MIDI is an integral part of my process - even when I record a live Hammod organ track, or piano, the MIDI tracks I set up act as default band until I replace them with live instruments - and many times, they don't get replaced. I have so many VSTis my machine bogs down if I'm not careful and I use even more on a separate PC just for VSTis. plus a Giga box for samples.

MIDI is here to stay, at least at my rig...

I only use MIDI for vocals.

Have you tried vertical stacking?

MIDI is essential for me and one of the reasons I didn't go PT when SVP folded.

DP has always had great MIDI implementation.

With a bunch of external MIDI boxes, DP is king.
Until the latest versions, it had the tightest timing and best performance.

I'm a 50/50, MIDI/audio guy, and I think MOTU should continue to develop both.

If you don't use any other DAWs DP's VI optimization may seem fine, but it's not. MOTU isn't competing in a vacuum. Logic can run 3 or 4 times more VIs and plugins w almost no GUI slow down and no sticky wiper.

It works surprisingly well, so long as you put the big people on the bottom.
