FYI
The gain is going to be 20Log[70/(70+R)] where 70 is the resistance (actually impedance) of your headphones and R is the series resistor.
So for a 70 ohm series resistor: 20Log(0.5)= -6.02 db.
A bigger resistor will give you more attenuation.
