Good, I'm glad they're putting things into writing. Although I've been told that it doesn't matter to Motu users what Digidesign do, Digi stated clearly on their website that the MPT would include the upgrade to PT7. This info then disappeared when the product arrived. Legally, I believe that the exact configuration of the kit was "subject to alteration". Also look out for the acronym "E&OE" which stands for "Errors and Omissions Excepted" - which is a handy phrase you can use instead of the words "don't believe a word of this".

As this is a thread for any new info on v2, without any positive or negative news forthcoming from Motu, I'm still going to be the voice of doom saying "beware!". My reasoning for this is that we hear fairly convincing rumours that a new library will be created for v2. It's reasonable to assume that this will be too large to download for most people. This makes me think that there may be a paid upgrade route to include the library. This would be excellent if it meant that the upgrade to the application itself was free, although it would disappoint me if I was the kind of samplist who used libraries predominantly. The option of some parts of a new Mach5 being paid for and some free hasn't even been mentioned. If Motu think the new v2-compatible-only library is a killer selling point, then they might even consider charging for the whole thing.

These are all possiblilities, but they seem commercially realistic to me. I still think we need to avoid expectations based on what was said over a year ago when it comes to v2. This includes spec and pricing - albeit if they've been automatically repeated recently. The initial information was just that. Things change - I'm sure when they announced v2 they expected it out before Q3 2006. What if it has cost them so much just to fix its problems that the finance department inisists they claw as much money back as possible? $10 upgrade fee? $100 with library?

Interesting point, 3over3. With a universal sampler going into v2, a v1 user may not want the additional sounds but could opt for them if it made a difference.

Still, I would personally feel a little odd if the original agreement were altered, especially when we've had no communications on this for so long. Should promises be so easily broken?

The crux of the argument seems to be whether Motu are the kind of company to go back on a pledge. I just feel that press releases and statements of aspiration aren't contracts, and particularly when there are large amounts of time involved things can change.

Again, I say that there are obviously serious problems with the M5v2 project. We simply don't know anything about it from the company's viewpoint. Let's wait (even longer) until something does appear and examine the offering then. As much as I'd love it to be free and wonderful... what if it's buggy, expensive and unnecessary?

Also, if I promise to shut up, can we leave this thread for solid information on version 2?

I for one want to go on record that I will be truly pissed off of MOTU do not honour their promise, and I can not believe that some of you are giving tacit approval to them for breaking it.

Even more, assuming that they do read this board, I can not understand why you help them out by giving them suggestions to get around their promise!

The current version is pretty much unusable for me, and I only bought it with the understanding that the next version will fix many of the asinine Wintel bugs that exist and hopfully the awful load time (One project I have in Live takes five minutes to load becasue of M5, and that's just a needless waste of my time).

I will not use M5 in any new projects, unless I really have no alternative, and that is not a good advertisement for M5.

... honestly, it isn't approval of any sort. I genuinely would think it offensively wrong if they don't upgrade for free, but that still doesn't stop me from thinking that there may just be the slightest possibilty that the sands may have shifted after all this time.

I just feel I should warn people with certain expectations that there are a number of options available to Motu: paid upgrade for a small fee; discount for v1 users; free upgrade excluding library; free upgrade excluding UVIx; no discount at all for anyone; completely free upgrade; free DVD posted to every registered user. I know which one I'd vote for...

Finally, regarding the notion that I'm giving them suggestions to get out of a promise, I'd lay good money that an accountant at Motu has already presented them with these and more and checked with the legal and promotions department...

Has all of your music been completed in the time you wanted? If you've ever been involved with development of anything creative, especially software, there are ALWAYS delays and things that you didn't expect.

I'm sorry to hear M5 isn't useable for you. It's been my main sampler since it was released and I have found to be very reliable and easy to use.

I'd hazard a guess that Universal Binary code has crept into the development picture and contributing to further delays in the release. No doubt there is also licensing issues with the sample content and making sure it rides in all international territories that could also be forcing delays. If you've ever had to deal with copyright or lawyers you'll know what i mean.

It amazes me how after all these years many software users still fall foul of the "I want it, and I want it now" without even knowing if it will necessarily improve ones workflow or output? :? If the lack of having something that isn't (yet) something is affecting or influencing one's work then maybe one needs to step back and consider their workflow.

Hell, i was just reading a Danny Elfmann article and he's using DP? on a Mac 9500 and some hardware samplers etc. Doesn't stop him from making killer music huh?

BTW that "E&OE" disclaimer does have some stick. They don't put it on just about every software product for nothing you know.

From another patient Uni-brethren fella... Keep up the good work MOTU.

yes, bENS, you are right on there - if you do a search here you will see we had a discussion here along those lines about a year ago, and it ended with someone giving out a link for an up-coming book that apparently describes in minute detail how the Beatles did all of their recordings - they didn't have no digital nuthin', but a lot of their music sounds reasonable, even today. Of course, there are lotsa other examples too where the technology didn't really matter...

I actually met Danny E once - it was in Oingo Boingo days when I was living in the US. He giged in our town, and at the time I was running a record store. I saw the gig and the next day he came into have a look around in the store, and we ended up having a really long chat and quite a few lafs too. He seemed like a pretty nice guy actually.

Apparently, he doesn''t read printed music, but it doesn't look like that has got in the way of tons of movies and simpson's episodes...

BTW, in case anyone cares, the Oztrailians are in the next round of the WC, but........
mmmmm.....
can't remember, but I don't I remember reading somewhere that the USA isn't....?
:P :P :P :P
Cheers,
BK

…string theory says that all subatomic particles of the universe are nothing but musical notes. A, B-flat, C-sharp, correspond to electrons, neutrinos, quarks, and what have you. Therefore, physics is nothing but the laws of harmony of these strings. Chemistry is nothing but the melodies we can play on these strings. The universe is a symphony of strings and the mind of God… it is cosmic music resonating through 11 dimensional hyperspace.

I've heard stories of him just humming ideas to a room full of musicians and them trying to figure out what he's saying and putting it together. that could be total b.s. though.

I'm sure he's a nice guy but I wish he had more than one idea, everything I hear from him sounds like variations on a theme.

oh, the shame...
I was out of town all last week so I missed the us-italy game and my wife accidently erased the recording.
I'm watching the us-ghana recording right now just to torture myself.
that p.k. was total b.s. though, that wasn't even a foul.

'scuse me butting in, but has anyone heard anything about MachFive version 2?

Here's the text of the standard Motu reply as of this week:

"We have not set a release date for MachFive version 2.
If you purchased MachFive v.1 on or after January 20, 2005, you will be eligible for a free upgrade.
Please continue to check our website often for the latest news, announcements, and updates."

Is it possible that MOTU prematurely announced V2 as a ruse to entice people NOT to buy Kontakt V2?

"Wait...don't buy our competitor's product! Our vastly superior software will be available any day now!"

And, now that Kontakt V2 users are griping about bugs and design flaws...
maybe MOTU isn't in such a big hurry to release M5 V2.

...hmmm.
