LOL!

Well as long as there's one - besides it's not like we need to go through it every day...

FWIW, there's also a full MX4 manual, on a separate pdf.

Where on the site can you download the PDF manuals?

Not sure you can. They're available in DP's Help menu.

Seems you can download the manual. The link is in one of the other threads on DP 9. I'd post it but I'm using some strange phone at the moment and can't figure out how.

Now I'm really glad I didn't order the boxed set.

Commercial print shops or Staples or Office Max won't touch copyrighted material either.

OK, seriously: FedEx/Kinko's will not only do it for you but they will bind and deliver. All you have to do is upload the .pdf. select the paper, binding and delivery and give them a credit card. It can all be done online. They consider copyright your issue in these cases and they are right to do so, especially in this case where your license includes the right to print that manual.

I imagine that printing many copies might raise a red flag but I print manuals for use in the field for some of the hardware I own. It costs about the same but having it collated and bound saves me a lot of time.

In this case, printing the User Manual double-sided on standard white paper or 30% recycled, 3-hole punch costs $105.83 ($99.60 without the 3-hole drilling). This includes a $9.90 discount for doing it online. You'd have to add the costs of 3-ring binders, tax and delivery if you don't want to pick up at the local store. This file is way too thick for their standard bindings.

People aren't complaining that there's a PDF manual, they're complaining that there may not be a full printed manual.

Pretty big difference there.

OK, let's get really specific.

As I understand it, the big, fat printed manual that came with DP 8 is still accurate except for the new and enhanced features - which will be covered in the smaller, more Earth-friendly Getting Started Guide (or whatever they are going to call it).

The folks NOT getting a new big, fat (environmentally wasteful) manual are those UPGRADING from DP8. New users (AFAIK) are getting the DP bible as well as the getting started guide.

And the COMPLETE, updated manual is available as a PDF. As far as I am concerned, I think MOTU should drop the printed manual all together and just provide the PDF. The manual is not useful, IMO, as a read thru from cover to cover kind of book. It's essentially a reference book, and most software companies stopped printing manual on paper years ago.

It's an environmentally and financially sensible move on MOTUs part and they should be applauded for it.

Don't have a Fedex/Kinko's in the area anymore. And even when we did they wouldn't begin to touch copyrighted material. You want to take the chance with copyrighted stuff like that then be my guest. A lot depends on whether the developer allows reproduction in any form or not. Some do, some don't but like I said I have had Staples and Office Max turn down printing copyrighted material.

Thanks. But like I said - they don't print copyrighted materials. Now I haven't checked whether the DP pdf manual is copyrighted but I do know the printed manual is copyrighted so I'd assume the pdf would be as well.

Exactly. As I already explained, you have the right to print the .pdf of the manual when you hold a license. I have done it many times. Kinko's/FedEx has never refused my money.

Perhaps an expert on Copyright should weigh in. Someone who does it for a living, perhaps? I'll see if I can find one.

Prior to using DP I used Cubase up to about 2007. I used to get the manuals printed, usually at kinkos in Vancouver. Never a question.
