I own a B3 and a A-100 Hammond organ and I can tell you for a fact that they are actually virtually identical schematically speaking. They were both made by Hammond but the only difference is the cabinet. The A-100 has an internal speaker that the B3 and C3 models don't have because it was designed for home use. (most people won't have a leslie at home) The "B" model is the designation for "Bar". The B3 is on legs and isn't skirted. The "C" model cabinet is designed for churches. It's skirted to the floor to keep those naughty people from looking up the organist skirt!!!! All three models internals are 100% interchangeable with the exception of the internal speaker within the A-100. In my studio I have a A-100 paired with a 122 Leslie. I also have a custom made back for it because the A-100 having been designed for home, was intended to be pushed against a wall so it didn't come with a fancy cover on its backside. I'll never sell either my B3 or my A-100!!!!!! Awesome sound that's just not easily replicated!!!!

Although I would largely agree, I would be curious to see the results of a double blind test of a B4-II played through a real Leslie vs the real thing played through the Leslie. It would surprise me if the difference was that noticable.

Also, it depends upon whether we're talking live or on a recording. Leslies sound totally different live than recorded (for obvious reasons), and I bet that a Leslie sim sounds pretty close to the real thing for studio use.

But yeah, for live, a synth with sim on a sold state amp (even a good one) vs the real package... not a chance.

Though I can't play it myself, I rarely go without B-3 in any of my own songs. I love that instrument. It brings out all kinds of emotions and feelings. I'm so glad there are VIs because I've never had the pleasure of owning a real one, though I've recorded quite a few.

Around 33 yeas ago, I worked for a piano/organ warehouse that had maybe twenty to thirty B-3s with Leslies in storage that they got as trade-ins for more modern "consumer" Rodgers and Yamaha organs. I could have purchased those B-3s for very little money. I wish I knew then what I know now.

I totally agree. But, they are definitely getting a lot closer. I always wanted a B3 with a leslie and every one of my band members tried to talk me out of getting one because of the pain to move it. There was a guy in town that tried to create a movable version by sawing off the bottom of it, but it was still a monster to lug up the stairs.

I had to use a Korg DW8000 and Yamaha DX7 to simulate the organs, which was terrible. lol. But, the new synths are getting a lot closer. Some of the fx pedals are getting pretty good at leslies. I tried out the Hughes & Kettner Rotosphere and it sounds great.

In the last year and a half, I have played an A, not an A-100. This has an extra set of tone wheels and weighs so much that the stage had to be tested first to make sure it would bear the extra weight.

There was also a B and a B2 before the B3. The last incarnation in the 1970s was the B-3000.

Absolutely day one. My DP7.24 is steady however I really want to see if the 64BIT really is going to allow my 12 Gigs of RAM to burn a hole into the aluminum case. NO Windows for me though!

Mike yes there was an extra tone generator in it; he played it through Leslie’s. After a time he got the B3 as to save the A; the B3 was not as bad to move.

MLC earlier you were talking about looping a 30 second commercial and such; so you use M5-3 to loop and adjust whole sequences? I never thought of that, how clever of you. I get more ideas from this site.

Some of the VI's sound good but they do not have the same control over the sound.
I still have a DX7; it is built like a tank, I only use it for some sounds like FM pads. I have Korg poly 800 it is put away; list $800 paid $600, l found one at a garage sale for $50!
If I had got a guitar it would still be worth something!

B3 on the other hand probably sell for more than the cost when new.

LOL. I just completed a long process of moving, and one of the last things in the back of the storage space was my old DW8000- still looks good! I'd be tempted to plug it in and try it, but IIRC the interior battery had died and I'd have to find the cassette to reload the programs.

B3 story: yes, that was a beast to lug up the stairs. Our B3 player had a knack for drinking and passing out on his keyboard at the end of the night, and many times we had to haul it out for him.

One night he was weaving home and the door on the back of his van opened up. He woke up the next day to a phone call from another musician who recognized the pieces of his B3 on the highway and scooped them up. After reassembly as a 'desktop model', that darned thing still sounded great! Weighed much less, too.....
