Just about anything will qualify. In my case, EXS-24 does it.

I have to agree with MLC. Marketing is about making a profit. Getting a load of customers is not always the best way to do that. A good product with features you can't get anywhere else, at a high price will beat heavy discounts and volume sales every time.

MOTU has obviously put a lot of investment into this, and it makes no sense to start discounting it right after the launch while they have a superior product. It just cannibalizes the income they can get from the initial sales. Discounts are what you do when your product has nothing to offer that can't be had from everyone else.

Besides, if you want a cheapo sampler, they're out there. Considering that an Ensoniq EPS used to run around $2-3k and did far less, I'd say M5 is quite a deal. But that's just me.

There's also a funny thing about pricing. Price too low and people don't think they getting their monies worth. Price higher and people often think they get what they pay for. In the case of MachFive, I think you do get what you pay for and a little more.

fwiw, Arma, you're not alone out there. for a handful of reasons, I'm not on the "early adopter" list for this one...
I don't understand this. If you like what you see, why not be an "early adopter"? This is not hardware. Nor is it the new Mac OS which can really screw you up sometimes if you get in too early.

If you don't think you have a use for the new features, fine, I wouldn't upgrade either.

If, however, you like what you see, why not? I have never had a new release of DP screw up my older versions. 7 or 6 or 5 will still work for you while you're waiting for MOTU to fix whatever annoyances you have in 8. Whatever happens in 8 will stay in 8. And, if it does everything you need right out of the box, you get to use it that much sooner. Incremental upgrade/fixes will be free.

If you don't have 7 yet, order your upgrade now. You'll get 7.24 now and 8 when it ships an no extra charge (I've a friend on 5.13 who asked MOTU and Magic Dave confirmed). Even if you are still on a PPC, that's a great deal for $195 - get the latest for your machine now and, if you upgrade your hardware later, you already have the next version - with tech support! BTW, I would think that the 'buy 7, get 8 free' deal goes away the second that 8 is ready to ship. Perhaps MOTU will keep 7 around for a while in case PPC users still want it but who knows?

The only exception to that for me was when DP 6 (a dog, IMO) changed the Mas Audio Unit file so it was incompatible with DP 5 and unless you could recover that from your system folder (or have someone send you one) you were pretty much dead in the water - which I was for a little while.

As for the upgrade, this is from the MOTU site:
Pricing and availability
Retail pricing, upgrade pricing, and availability for DP8 will be announced later, but if you purchased DP7 on January 19, 2012 or later, you can receive the DP8 upgrade at no charge.

Exactly. Discounting doesn't lead to loyalty.

It's not so much what I'm seeing, as what I'm *not* seeing that raises concerns.
As for the "next, great things",
(1) 64 bit - will be great (and necessary), but while it's loaded with huge possibilities, it's also fraught with potentially huge problems. I'd just prefer to wait a bit on this until I believe it's as solid as 7.24,
(2) PC - not interested (unless Apple drops the MacPro!)...
(3) the DSP plugs/guitar stuff - not interested,
(4) new PunchIn/PunchOut feature - don't need it,
(5) video with MOTU's video boxes - don't have any MOTU video boxes,
(6) new Themes - I'm still thanking iPerformer and Amplidood for those...no credit MOTU due there...

So, I'm hoping that there will be a handful of useful *MIDI* features/fixes that have yet to have been announced. Without these, no need to jump too soon.
mikehalloran wrote:If you don't think you have a use for the new features, fine, I wouldn't upgrade either.
On this, we agree...
mikehalloran wrote:(DP)7 or 6 or 5 will still work for you while you're waiting for MOTU to fix whatever annoyances you have in 8.
Mike, my "annoyances" (all documented) go back to DP3 and some/most have never been addressed. No reason to think they will be in DP8. But hope springs eternal?!
Naw, MOTU will undoubtedly sooner or later get my upgrade fee...just feels like I can happily keep using 7.24/SL/Lion and wait a while for this one.

I am with you on this; things have changed so fast.
My wife’s cousin has a Synclaver and it ran over $100K when he got it and I bet it is nothing like what we have today.
He also helped make the sound sets and did some development work on the Emu Emulator.

I do not know if I spelled all the names right, but hay forgive me.

I also think (occasionally) that people seem to overlook some of the little things in MachFive, like the inclusion of the incredible inclusion of IRCAM technology. If M5 was part of DP I doubt MOTU would have paid to license that technology. Some of us prefer to have better tools that do include cutting edge features like IRCAM.

So I guess we need to put a sharper point on this. Does the camp wanting MachFive at a discount or included in DP really want MachFive or do they just want a sampler?

MOTU HAS included a sampler in DP. Not enough for you? Then quit yer bitching' and cough up the bucks for the tools you need.

This post will loop in 13.75 seconds pitch shifted down exactly 5.6667 steps with no apparent loss in quality and 2.34% faster to fit into a 30 second TV spot for MOTU.

See what I'm sayin'?

I'm upgrading the first day it's available! Having seen it run at NAMM, I like it. Also that it's 100% Cocoa finally. MOTU people I asked said it will run fine on Snow Leopard which is what I will be doing. I think this one is going to be pretty safe from the beginning, just like 7.0 was in my experience. We won't experience another 6.0 ever again I'm pretty sure! :)

Well if it's any wonder to you the things still sell for $10k+ used. The DAC converters in them are top of the line even by todays standards, and from what I know there's one for each voice as opposed to a single unit. If I was rich I would probably own one, emulation only goes so far.

What could a Synclavier do that we can't do a thousand times over? And in a fraction of the time?

Is the $10,000 price tag more of an Antiques Road Show price?

Shoosh

I saw one first hand at two studios...massively expensive.

However a good Mini-Moog on eBay is going for about the original list price.

I know, 'cause I sold one using Buy It Now a few years ago and it sold in 15 minutes. (My BIN price was WAY too low!) :(

Live and (hopefully) learn...
