Is anyone else STILL getting the pop up MAS error when switching sample rates with DP7 & SL????

Inquiring minds want to know.
I've just installed DP7, David, and the CPU "Audio Performance" Meter is way high; over 60%. . . with just a few MIDI Tracks.

 caveat  I haven't emptied out old System files that may be taxing the processor, nor have I repaired permissions, so this is just an early report, till I get some zzz's and do a more thorough test/play, in the morning...

EDIT - To summarize, I opened the same file in DP6.02 and the CPU hit was between 85 and 95 = 30% higher than DP7's... so I figure the high CPU readings must be a result of my 128 buffer setting I'd made to make the VI drums playable.

Well obviously something isn't right with your system or installation.

First impressions:

Me likey! Installed without incident on my G5 and MacBook Pro.

All I've really done so far is load up some older projects and mess around with some of the new features while going through the 'new features' guide.

Seems like old projects load faster in 7 than in 6.02 or 5 - things are particularly screamin' on the MBP.

DP 7 appears more CPU efficient than 6.02 on the G5 - I did a rough comparison of the CPU meters on the same project in 5.13, 6.02, and 7. Cool!

The new features that probably make the biggest difference to me are the real-time fades and the fact that Merge Soundbites can now include a time-range selection that doesn't contain audio. Not huge, sexy new features, but things that can make the workflow smoother.

I also like that you can now display V-racks in the mixer next to regular mixer strips, and will probably like the Channel Strip window and/or Mixer controls in the info bar, particularly for making volume adjustments when editing tracks in the SE.

Might use the in-line EQ and dynamics slots in the mixer, but it's probably just as easy to open up the plug-in windows to make adjustments.

If it's as efficient and stable as it seems at first glance, I'll be a happy camper. Yes, it feels more like a 6.5, and I probably won't use the new effects boxes much, but somehow none of that bothers me much.

I noticed they've also cleaned up the User Guide a bit. For example, screenshots of the MW EQ are much clearer, and the MW Leveler screenshots now match the actual plug-in.

So far, so good!

I forgot to indicate that I had Superior Drummer 2.1 open. That may explain some of the CPU drain, but I will proceed with cleaning up the install, and repost soon, James. Glad to hear it's a configuration issue and not my G5 DC2.3 growing long in the tooth. Maybe 3GB of RAM is insufficient nowadays, but in Tiger on the G5, can DP really access more? (no other apps open except Digidesign DigiCore Manager.)

James, please see my edited post right above your reply.... It was a 128 buffer setting I think. . . I threw out 2 preferences, repaired permission, restarted twice, but that did nothing. In the end, the sequence itself ran 30% more CPU intensive under DP6.02 than under DP7, so a non-issue. Thanks.

If there is no audio what is being merged? Does it extend the resulting soundbite with a blank area of sound? That would be good when adding a plugin such as reverb on a short clip (where the tail would usually not fit, for example). If that is the case, I wonder if it would be possible to apply reverb of echo etc., to a short bite via plugin processing and have the resulting soundbite be extended for the duration of the plugin tail...? DP8 wish list? Is that even possible?

DP7 arrived yesterday but I won't get to install it until tomorrow at the earliest. All my questions answered then...? :)

From what I am understanding of the way the merge works in DP7, I would think the scenerio you described is possible right now as long as your merge selection extends long enough to capture that reverb tail. This new merging functionality is really a superb idea, since now you can create a merged audio file which starts right at the beginning of a bar (or of the song) without having to make sure there is a "piece" of blank audio there.

That's what I sayin' :) Up to DP6 I had to record a bit of silence, merge it to the clip and then apply a plugin to get the full effect (to quote Ralph Cramden). So that begs the question if I have a clip that has a plug in in the mixer and I select the short clip, extend the selection to include the tail and merge, will I get the reverb?

Rhetorical question. I'll find out soon enough.

This is how Pro Tools works. You can still do it the old way by just selecting the soundbites themselves, but at least now there is an easy way to include larger areas without having to deposit "dummy" audio in order to do so.

That's the term I was looking for--- "Dummy" audio.
No more need for dummy audio. :D
