I probably will not download all the new sounds for DP10. The fact that they are tied to an iLock is a downer for me.

I don't think you need the physical iLok, do you?? Just the iLok account. You can authorize most things to you computer directly. I've had an iLok account forever and it's been reliable and unobtrusive, and simple to use.

The MOTU site is quite clear that you do not need the physical iLok dongle.

I quite agree on iLok—easy to use and unobtrusive. Not tying the VI library license to DP (or MV3) allows you to use it in other applications. This is a benefit.

OTOH, if you do have MachFive 3, you do not need to have 10.2GB where 5.1GB will suffice. I tried the MV3 download and the UVI 3 player loads it just fine.

"motu-instruments.zip.cpgz" (?) until I didn't use the MacOS to unzip ...I had to use Keka to unzip to get a .ufs
This has been a Mac OS issue from El Cap that wasn't finally fixed till the last build of Sierra. Not everybody has problems with it and not all zip files misbehave. PSP refused to believe they were affected. It was Eventide support who turned me onto keka.app.

Does anyone know if DP9.5 is forwards compatible with DP10 projects? I found that DP8 can open 9.5 projects just fine.

I've been using The Unarchiver, free on the App Store. It seems a little more transparent than Keka, and does some of those new weird archive formats WIndows people use.

Forward compatible, yes, but DP10 files are not backwards compatible. You you need to “Save-As DP 7-9” if you want to go back to 9.5 etc.

I've played it a bit. As long as you don't use 10 specific features, you should be fine.

Some shared resources will be overwritten. Like 8 to 9, probably won't be an issue but, if it is, reinstalling the older version will overwrite those files again (then they won't behave properly in 10). At some point, you commit.

I had a real problem between 9.51 and 9.52. Certain tracks worked poorly 9.51 but 9.52 freaked out — and 9.51 exhibited the same behavior (reinstalling 9.51 reversed the problem). The issue turned out to be corrupted headers in AIFF-C files but, until I figured that out, it was truly strange.

I think you're confusing the two terms. Backwards compatibility is DP10 opening DP9 files (since it's going backwards to the file). Most commonly this is a term used in the video game industry where one console can play games made for an older legacy system. Forwards compatibility is the opposite: an older version of the program able to go "forward" and open documents made by a newer version, in this case DP9 opening DP10 projects.

I know it's confusing, and I even did a double take myself, but this is the wikipedia definition, and in line with most of the lingo I've heard.

Ah. Got it. Sry. But I think you get the gist... DP10 can open projects created with older versions np, but older versions of DP can not open projects created in DP10. ...it's been a while since this was the case actually. Projects created with the last few versions of DP (7 to 9 I guess) were version-agnostic as I recall. I'm guessing older versions wouldn't know what to do with mix-crucial features like VCA faders etc.

I've noticed that the last few versions of DP have not made any changes to the data structure of projects, possibly not since DP6 when Comping was introduced. it's actually been a bit of a sore point with me, since I think there's a lot of room for improvement in the nitty-gritty of track data options that would require new structures. All DP8 and DP9 enhancements were interface-related, with the exception of time stretching. Things like automation lanes and improved track creation dialogs do nothing to the file structure.

DP10 with it's clips window, on the other hand, is a huge new data type.

So if I have MachFIVE 3, I don’t need the new MOTU instruments download that comes with DP10? They are all included in M53? If this has been clarified I missed it.

Clarified by MOTU? No.

I spent 10 minutes looking it over and concluded that the two libraries were the same. If MOTU or anyone examines them more carefully and says I’m wrong, then I am. Both are 5.1G downloads. The loops and instruments have the same names. I did not do a byte for byte comparison. Both also open in the current version of the stand-alone UVI 3 Player (downloadable from MOTU or UVI).

I didn’t check to seee if the other MV3 libraries (Telematic, The Upright etc.) also open in UVI 3 Player but I expect that they will. Of course having those libraries does no good without having the right M53 license as they are iLok protected.

So, those of us with MachFive 3 do not have to download the 5.1G Motu Instruments as long as we have Universal Loops and Instruments installed and the MV3 licenses in our iLok accounts. I’m pretty sure... unless I am wrong... but it works for me.

Thanks for doing that Mike, saved me from having to!

It makes sense that MOTU would free up that content for DP, as they no doubt own it, and Mach 5 is more or less history.
