Need I be concerned about this stuff? I thought that when I took my machine in the fella at the Apple store was simply going to swap the heat sinks and apply the Arctic Silver I bought. That's fine, right? If not, why'm I bothering with the Arctic Silver if there's an unnecessary lid in place trapping a whole lotta heat?

Still waiting for the chips BTW. Had to go through a friend of my cousin's in New Mexico (gave him U$100 for his trouble) 'cause the store wouldn't post direct, even 'though its blurb said it does so...

Simply put: No.

You have a 5,1. It uses normal CPUs. No de-lidding required. The "lid" is the IHS or Integrated Heat Spreader. It does not trap heat and is part of the CPU and Mac Pro design. If you remove it, the CPU will not make contact with your MP heatsink and you will have a massive fail on your hands.

Only owners of 4,1 (2009) Dual CPU MPs need be concerned with this.

The processor was advertised as new but there was a small (tiny) amount of thermal paste on the chip,so I don't know if it was tested & is actually new or pulled from a server.In either case it works, it was cheap and it looks like this Mac Pro will be a nice upgrade from my '08 2.8 Quad.

The Apple store was reticent and busy so I took it upon myself to do it. Had to go shopping for an allen key long enough to reach the fixing screws for the heat-sink assembly, but that was the only "hitch".

Question:
My cousin applied the Arctic Silver paste to one of the processors whilst I cleaned the first one I removed, and he used much less paste than I did on the second CPU. I squeezed a sine-wave shaped line across the top and smeared it, reaching 3mm from the edges. He, on the other hand, made a circular shape that was much thinner than mine as well as being 10mm or so from the nearest edges. He said it shouldn't matter, but I'd still like to ask, "Does it?".

I was relieved that software registrations seem to be tied to the motherboard or something other than the CPUs; I was concerned that I'd have to re-register DP and my free Slate, Eventide and Sound Toys plug-ins.

All seems well. The fan/s seem/s to be spinning a little quicker, but I s'pose that's to be expected. Haven't noticed any difference in performance yet as I won't be firing DP up to work for some time. Omnisphere is on the cards 'though, and if my testing confirms that I'll have enough grunt there to further reduce my outboard load prior to upgrading to MOTU's AVB line (once I confirm that multiple-unit networks are stable over USB2), at least I can be confident that this upgrade should cover me for (hopefully) many years to come. Mainly 'cause of electricity-supply price increases, I'm finally starting to take more seriously the option of reducing the MIDI-hardware component of my setup.

The purchase last year of the entry-level 2012 Mac went to plan as I intended all along to upgrade the CPUs once the Xeon price had dropped. For once, as John "Hannibal" Smith might have said, I love it when a plan comes together.
