I've been following this thread and actually James has been really flexible with our MOTU complaints - check out the OT forum on MOTU tech support. I think all the hooppla was probably triggered by one little word that connotes an attitude more than anything, the word (is it a word?) ' duh'. That said, I understand the frustration, especially when 6.01 crashes in front of clients, and old problems like volume surge and MIDI stuck notes still crop up.

Anyway, thanks again James for clearing up the 6.02 update question - can't wait 8) .

I think that whilst this may be james's forum - it seems to be the official un-official motu site..

who knows who lurks here under cover?

I think they do as some issues are addressed - which is a good thing.. I want motu to improve their product as I dont want to go and buy another one!

Your not really Madboy are you.

I have only run DP for 2 sessions after upgrading to a Mac Pro but so far the things that were driving me crazy are not happening on the pro.

Gads; I step out of town for 2 freaking days, and this place goes all to heck.

Well, I'm glad to know there is still a healthy dialog about the health of DP.

Just wish it didn't make me feel impatient to read it again for the umpteen hundredth time. There's a difference between criticizing DP and trashing MOTU.

Let me use one example to illustrate the challenge of keeping DP current and in some ways cutting-edge, whose solutions I believe have been simply amazing: I can open up files from 1987, 88, 89, 90... and the windows open in exactly the positions and sizes they were on my original 128KMac (upgraded to 512, then 2MB), or in the latter cases, my Macintosh SE, or Quadra 660 AV, or whatever Mac I was using at any given time. Think of the operating systems this application has been through, and changes of platform, and these things still open and work as if they were made yesterday? Of course it was just "Performer" then, but that is the integrity of the team that has kept this app and its parent app together for about 24 years. I understand that's not important to someone who just bought it in the past few years, but let's make this a two-way street, and see if those people can imagine why it might be important to ME. No, it's not for sentimental reasons. Sequences are sequences, and I shouldn't have to do them over just because I've upgraded DP. At some point, that may change, but I can always go back to versions that open the files and save them as newer versions.

But when you think of everything it does now, and does brilliantly, yet it still opens files that are over 20 years old, you're looking at some carefully considered design. There are very few Mac apps that have this continuity, probably fewer than 5. Or this may be the only one, possibly excepting TextEdit, which is most certainly not intended to be a leading, cutting-edge word processor. DP is one of the great DAWs, and THE DAW of choice by many top folks in the music industry. So, great... we have high level users complaining about it, too. But most of the truly great DP users I know of are quite considerate and careful in their commentary not to malign MOTU needlessly, and not to diminish the user experience of others who come to this forum for support.

Thanks for the humor. I need a laugh before I lose it and start breaking things
To the guy who said they should take their time, I guess you don't write music for television. This should have happened months ago. It's disgraceful! They're allocating all these resources to some stupid drum machine program, while (presumably) they're flagship product doesn't even work, at all. It just crashes repeatedly if it doesn't like some Audio Unit. If I didn't have so many projects already in the can on DP which I need to refer back to (but now can't, because they won't open) I'd go to Logic in heartbeat!

Yeah, I could have done without the "duh" and I certainly would have, had I known it would have generated so much hoppla. We all have various levels of frustration. I'm in the minority of DAE users. Unfortunately, the DAE aspect of DP has pretty much been seriously lagging behind the other updates. I realize that DAE is not MOTU's primary concern, but it's really hard when we went from DP4 with full DAE support to DP5 which had half support and not a single DAE update until 6. Now 6 is still not functioning for DAE and looks like it will take the back seat again for another round of updates (6 months, longer??) It's been years since DP was fully functioning with DAE. I was really excited when they announced that DP6 was finally suppose to have full DAE functioning. Then we got it and it doesn't work. It was such a huge let down. That's liable to drive anyone to "duh"

It works for me most of the time.

Threats of logic get you nowhere really.

Well with all due respect, Keith, you're incorrect on most counts. BPM was probably farmed out to UVI who developed MachFive for MOTU and I seriously doubt whether it had any impact at all on DP develpment. So they weren't "allocating all these resources to some stupid drum machine program" as you state. Secondly, the fact that you call it "some stupid drum machine program" further displays your ignornace. Additonally, if MOTU makes bucketfulls of money with BPM, it's not going to be a bad thing-- especially if they DID NOT have to pull people away from DP development (see above.)

Also you're doing something wrong with your setup to have the sorts of problems you describe. I hate it when people throw the word "disgraceful" around here. And no, I don't write music for television, but then I actually figure out how to have DP 6.01 running well on my machine, rather than post a bunch of general slams about DP on a board because I can't figure out how to get my DAW working. (Which *I* find disgraceful.) To say their "flagship product doesn't even work at all" is ignorant and incorrect.

Congratulations, htieksppircs... you're EXACTLY the sort of forum member that makes me regret ever starting this board. How many posts have you made here? I can't see right now in the message composition window, but I'll bet it's in the single digits. Have you ever tried posting some specifics of your problem so someone might help you fix it, because the way you describe your problems with DP leads me to believe you haven't, considering you're vague and you describe issues that are solved for most users.

{OTHER DAE STUFF SNIPPED}

If I had PT hardware and depended on compatibility with PT Hardware and DAE full time, I'd use Pro Tools. Keep in mind this is my own worthless opinion, but I get the feeling there is no love lost between Digi and MOTU. If it weren't for MOTU coming out with the original 2408, Digi would have had a year or two longer of bleeding dry their user base. I doubt very much MOTU gets a whole lot of help from Digi resolving DAE problems. Again... I don't KNOW this to be true... I just have a feeling. I personally have NEVER expected that DP would be as fully functional on PT hardware as PT itself... or even Logic for that matter as I don't think Digi views Apple as a competitor. I suspect that Digi would love to be able to bury MOTU and get back some of the marketshare they lost to MOTU.

Excuse me, but WTF does that have to do with anything? Is waiting DP 6.02 slowing down your process? What have you been using thus far (assuming your implication that you write for TV is true)? Have you gotten to the point of writing for broadcast on the promise of a DP 6.02 release? I mean seriously, you gotta get those apples out of your orange bag.

A useless medium now IMHO

There's some good music on TV. Most of it doesn't fit the project (show) and is ALWAYS too loud (so you can't hear the V.O.) or too much (so they can rack up the royalties) or too repetitive (while they wait for DP 6.02 :P ) but otherwise, it's not inherently bad.
