IRCAM TS2

Post by stubbsonic »

If you were waiting for this to go on sale (which it does from time to time) your patience as been rewarded. $49.

If you don't know about IRCAM TS2 (Time-Stretch?), you should. There are quite a few monophonic pitch & time things, but this one is especially effective for pitch shifting or time-stretching mixed material. As a teacher, I use it all the time to slow tracks down and/or change keys for kidz to practice with. But it does so much, and is truly fascinating. It is truly one of my favorites.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I don't know that Audio Hijack will be more efficient than the way I'm doing things now but I hope it is. @ $51, I won't lose sleep if it isn't. I don't like that Roxio's Live Screen Capture still installs SoundFlower and can't work without it.

There's a bit of overlap between products. Audio Hijack seems geared toward capturing and monitoring audio from apps. Loopback is a bit different in that it creates virtual input or output devices (which include audio from a mixture of combined sources), and those devices are published in the system so they can be used in other apps. I don't know if there are significant difference in terms of buffering/latency between Audio HIjack and Loopback. The cost difference is significant.

Thanks for the tip. I use Piezo all the time to grab little clips I want to study or transcribe. Good little company.

What do these do that can’t be done with the free virtual audio devices like Blackhole?

I'm not sure but I intend to find out this week.

One app I like for screen recording is Live Screen Capture.app from Roxio, still bundled with Toast. Unfortunately, it depends on and installs Soundflower which is long depreciated and has caused a few problems, confirmed by Apple. Unfortunately, I cannot make Blackhole work with that app. There's a certain amount of switching Output in System Preferences/Sound to make it work so I must have that screen open at all times (fortunately, I use multiple monitors). Screen recording with QuickTime works pretty well but monitoring, then playing back audio involves even more fiddling around with System Preferences/Sound. The old 32 bit QuickTime Pro did this easily if we paid whateverthehell that was back in the day.

OK, I get it—Apple does not want to make this possible in the MacOS and has a few hundred million reasons in the form of EU fines if they do—going through the microphone is ok as that's not a digital audio recording. If Audio Hijack can provide a simple workflow to do what I need, then it's worth the $51. If not, it's another bit of change that I've spent.

I will start a new thread with what I find, hopefully in a few days.

All the Rogue Amoeba stuff is super-user friendly (great support, clear GUI's), very configurable, and easy to learn/config.

Stubbs: I appreciate ease of use, but once you’ve gone through the setup of the virtual devices, and understood the signal path, it’s quite (a lot of stuff makes more sense once see the signal path).

Mike: I’ve moved on to Blackhole, despite not having any problems with Soundflower, but I’m still using the old steam powered OS versions. Apple might be concerned with EU fines, but not to the point where they have removed the option in Quicktime to reroute audio at the same time as you screen record the video.

Interesting to see what you come up with over the next week.

Re: Plug-in Sales: PSP Echo

I got an ad from PSP for Echo at an intro price of $29, tried and bought it. If you've gone through hoops to duplicate all sorts of obscure delay effects on guitars, or tried to sound like Joe Walsh or David Gilmour, this plugin is for you. It has a few extra features that make some of these effects really easy to duplicate, and one of the more convincing tape emulations I've heard.

Hmmm... I saw that. Was very tempted, but my plug-in spending has been out of control lately. Sigh. Maybe I'll demo it.

The sale is still going. Just grabbed it. I'm such a plug-in slut. Sigh... It's cool that it has a M1 native installer. For AAX, you just have to go back and also run the Intel installer and customize and choose AAX.
