You can open the manual in Preview by clicking on the appropriate entry in the Help menu, then use the File menu in Preview to save it or export it as a PDF to wherever you'd like it to sit.
Yes, that's great. I probably will export to PDF so I can read up on certain things even when I'm not at my Mac.

For those who do not have MachFive 3 and wonder about the upgrade ... you know, wait for another version or two ... Found a good reason to do it now if you don't have many VIs.

The 5G MOTU Instruments open in the free standalone UVI 3 player. This means they are available to other applications besides DP. For kicks, I loaded them into a Finale 26 project this morning just to see what happened.

Yes, as far as I can tell, this is identical to the Universal Loops and Samples included in MachFive 3. Likewise, you need the iLok activation code and you don't get that without owning DP 10 or MV3.

I haven't tried the others from Big Fish or LucidSamples.

Even if you don't want to use DP 10 yet, you can do a lot worse for $198.

You can also right-click on Digital Performer.app, "Show Package Contents", then browse to Resources/English.lproj/Digital Performer Help/pdfs. All the PDF manuals are in there; just ALT-drag 'em to another folder (I keep them in my Dropbox).

The latest LoopCloud browser that you install to download the free loops and one-shots from them (LoopMasters) now allows you to drag all of your existing loops and one-shots into that browser as well, and they automatically tag them for you! This makes organizing a ton of loops a breeze - so still ANOTHER fantastic value-add for those who upgrade to DP10!

kinda related to this, is it legal to have the PDF User Guide printed/bound? "Copyright Notice" on pg. ii would indicate "not", I think. "No part of this publication may be reproduced, transmitted, transcribed, stored in a retrieval system, or translated into any human or computer language, in any form or by any means whatsoever, without express written permission of Mark of the Unicorn, Inc."
But I wonder if MOTU would care if paid-up users are printing out their own copies? Or having FEDEX/Staple do it?

This is cool, I'm gonna run some hard tests on this and see how it does.
It definitely sounds like at the very least MOTU signed with the best devil when it comes to these loop services. I don't think Splice etc. allow you the user to use their application on your non commercial loops and snips of audio? I've actually got quite a few from Reaktor experiments, the whole "I don't know what I just did but if I don't record it, I'm never figuring that out again" thing.

1. I renamed my DP9.5 in my applications folder to "Digital Performer 9". I installed DP10 and it replaced Digital Performer in my Applications. Weird. How to I keep 2 copies of DP on my system?

2. Where are the new sound banks/VI's that are bundled with DP10? I don't see them anywhere.

I'm still demo-ing DP before I purchase the upgrade.

1) On the FB page, people are saying that, if there's no dot in the file namr, it overwrites—weird. I renamed mine Digital Performer 9.52 and was good.

2) You download the 5G Instruments plus the Loops etc. from your Licenses page at motu.com after purchase.

FYI. After downloading The MOTU Instruments sound bank I get a "motu-instruments.zip", which unzipped to: "motu-instruments.zip.cpgz" (?) until I didn't use the MacOS to unzip ...I had to use Keka to unzip to get a .ufs (what Falcon and UVI read).

This came up a long time ago with Cubase who stopped printing manuals around V3 or 4. The general conclusion was that it is OK to print for person use, although it appears to vary by country. I suspect your country has a stricter interpretation than mine.

I tried to read the rules once and was impressed by the author who managed to write thousands of words that said little, could be interpreted any way you like, and would provide full time employment for thousands of copyright lawyers. It boiled down to "you can copy things for personal use, if you already have them, and you don't hang on to the copy too long, unless you can't copy them."

If you're optimistic you can consider a theme (at least here) that says if you have a properly obtained copy of something, you can alter the format, so you can rip CD you bought to put MP3s on your phone. Notably, the copies don't have to be from one digital media to another. Here at least, it seems you can make cassette copies of your CDs, or MP3s of your vinyl. So it seems a small step to go from a PDF to print on paper. And the print shops here seem to have no issues printing manuals.

Taking a copyright notice like the one MOTU published at its word can lead to absurd conclusions. Simply alt-dragging the PDF out of the app into your Documents folder quite clearly violates the literal interpretation, as does the practise of copying and pasting paragraphs from the manual into a post on this list. Taking the notice literally, you would not even be allowed to read it aloud because that translates it into a human language. You could however, get your non-robot dog to bark it out.

I haven't done this in a while, but I have a little stand for my (very old iPad2) and I imported the PDF manual into iBooks and find it was a convenient way to reference it if needed while working in DP and it's still searchable that way.
