Yay, my templates are working again! DP 7 will now default to WAV files (I'm guessing other options as well), and my audio and MIDI I/Os show up active. So far so good.

So the Stylus RMX problem James reported must be a PPC thing. I hope there aren't more PPC things lurking in the future. Still sounds a lot like a much needed overhaul.

Dave - I was scanning the posts and ran across yours... and jumped the page ... I had to go back because I knew it was you just from the verbiage. I have Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro and still just have Leopard on the Mac Pro. Thought I'd test it out there first. DP6 seems to be working great with S.L. Haven't noticed a huge speed issue, though. I would have 7 now if it weren't for that damn money thing ... I can't wait for 7, though - 6 is just a slug for me.

Shooshie wrote:If anyone's interested, I updated the file in my "First Impressions" post that was linked to the Concertino da Camera by Jacques Ibert. It's a lot more balanced and the strings are in time, but the new saxophone sound is not satisfactory yet...

And assuming that if you're interested you'd rather not scroll back, HERE is the same link, repeated.

•100% Wallander for all winds
•100% VSL for all strings
•Altiverb: Berlin Phil Hall...
Speaking of opinions being like noses...

Hearing your alternate version of this piece is a good bit of education for me in terms of how a listener is affected by how you set up a piece and whether the perception is that the piece is finished or still very much under construction. And it also has reminded me of how there are so many different sentiments and opinions.

I have to admit that I much preferred the earlier version of your piece. It was actually the sounds of those strings and sax that I found so charming, because they made your "orchestra" sound the way it would have sounded on a 1920s/1930s classical recording. I was actually surprised that Sir Shooshie was into the idea of making his recording sound like it would have on an old 78 record, and was impressed with your choice of instruments.

To *my* ears, the more you make it sound realistic (in terms of sonic clarity) the more it takes away from that period-piece charm. The concert hall reverberation also seems to subtract from that vintage tone I was digging. I prefer the instrument presence in the earlier demo, since it makes the piece sound more like it was recorded in a studio rather than a concert hall.

But I am fascinated by all this, so I will eagerly listen again when you get the sax the way you want it. I am glad, though, that I downloaded a copy of the version you posted a few days ago. I've listened to it a few times with pleasure. :-)

I have to say that I am IMPRESSED with DP7! This has been the smoothest upgrade bar none! I am usually the last kid on the block to throw an upgrade up because I hate losing creative time, but this WORKS! Bravo MOTU! You got it right! Logic has been silent since DP7 came to my studio~!

Peace

And one assumes the metronome bug is also crushed?

Is there a bug list for DP 7? I mean, which bugs they crushed? Or are we left guessing? I seem to recall there being one for DP 6 (or maybe I was dreaming...)

I just installed DP7 on my Dual 2.5GHz G5 w/8GB RAM and an original MOTU 828, and I'm running it under Tiger 10.4.8.

(I never upgraded to 10.4.11 as I've been working on some slow-moving projects (approaching 2 years now one one project for a client that doesn't really know what he wants, and is happy to pay me to throw paint at the canvas for him  ), and I'm also following the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" since my system has been stable in this configuration. I can also run DP7 under 10.5.4 when I boot from the other internal drive.)

I also have DP 5.13 on this machine. They seem to happily coexist for now. I've been working exclusively in 5.13; I have 6.01 installed but haven't been using it. I never could get the 6.02 updater to work; it kept getting stuck (something about a triangle resource not loading properly or something like that).

I posted this to both DP7 threads; I couldn't decide which one to post it under.

My initial quick observations of DP7 under Tiger 10.4.8:

DP7 projects load very quickly, in about 1/4 the time DP5.13 took or less.

Edge edit, cutting & moving soundbytes all working.

Altiverb - works fine
Metric Halo ChannelStrip - works fine
Auto-Tune Evo - can't change any parameters
Elemental Audio - can't change any parameters
Guitar Rig 3 - can't change any parameters
T-rackS - GUI of plug-in window turns white when I click on a knob; I can hear the effect but I can't change anything or see what I'm doing

Sorry that's all I have time for right now. I have a session this afternoon at another studio that I manage, so I'll have to get back to this later. I won't have much time to play with DP7 this week as both my bands are playing at Earthdance this weekend and I'm rehearsing and practicing for that, but you can bet I'll be getting back to DP7 every chance I get, and running it under both Tiger and Leopard.

(Cross-posted from the other thread for all you Intel folks)

More about DP7 on a Dual 2.5 GHz G5 w/8 GB RAM under Tiger 10.4.8

DP7's Channel Strip works.

Opened a medium sized DP 5.13 project with appx. 20 tracks and some plugs (Altiverb, Metric Halo ChannelStrip) and everything was fine.

Opened a very large DP 4.61 project with around 40 tracks (many of them frozen), heavily laden with plugs, and it crashed and quit after briefly showing all the windows I'd left open. However, this is likely to be a bug in my system: I could open the same project in 4.61, but I couldn't open it in 5.13 or 6.01. Maybe it's not as stable as I thought.

I think I need a new Mac Pro.

Not sure if anyone is still wondering about delivery times but.....
Ordered mine online Sunday night with the 2-day option.
Order confirmation today. Delivery tomorrow.
My second initial is 'P' so i don't think it works like that as someone previously mentioned.
I'll have the whole of Wednesday to play. Yippee! I'll keep you posted....
I used DP5 with my V-Drums and MachFive5 with beautiful results. Hope DP7 delivers!!!!!
Thanks for all of the 'first impressions' so far :D

Any Australians received a DP7 upgrade yet?

We're just poor cousins, I guess.

And Major Music (local distributors) still don't have any copies and want to charge $AUS299 for an upgrade (that's $US261 compared to the US price of $195).

Bit rich, hey?

Yeah, we are poor cousins. Always hard hearing how cool something is and you can't try it yet.
Considering that Major Music are MOTU distributors they seemed to know VERY little about this whole thing... even a day or 2 ago they were looking at the MOTU website to give me answers about upgrade info etc.
They said two weeks but.... could be longer. DP6 upgrade took quite a while! Pity it can't be downloaded...

It is a long way from Boston to the land down under and clipper ships are not all that fast.

I still expect to see a bit more infomation on DP7. Dp7 on an intel? Some one have any more to say. I can only wait for a day or so and then I will have to buy it any ways. Buying upgrades is like booze to an alki.
