Anyone care to inform me what will happen to my Kontakt 2 patches when I install Kontakt 3 with Komplete? Do I need to take steps to preserve data from the old sample library when installing the new one? Thanks!

HC, are you referring to custom patches you created, third-party libraries, or internal Kontakt libraries that may or may not have "made it" to the K3 update?

Yes, but majority fall within the latter two categories.

Yes Backward compatibility is a consideration. I wrote to NI about selling the stand alone versions of Guitar Rig and Kontakt (Where I owned versions 1,2 etc) and they said that if I sell them I need to uninstall all the previous versions which could be a hassle when trying to open old projects

If you know where the patch files are, just copy them somewhere else, back them up, etc. Re-importing later is easy.
My recollection, but it's been a long time, is that the K3 installer asks whether you want to replace or keep your K2 libraries.
Also, I do not recall any problems in the past, stepping on custom stuff when doing major version updates.
I cannot say this with certainty, unfortunately. And they don't seem to discuss this in the user manual.
I think the Thompson Learning "Kontakt Power!" book discussed upgrade issues, but I tossed mine as I felt it had little value-added to the official user guide.

Thanks! We're installing now. NI isn't the strongest on providing documentation, I must opine. For example, I didn't see it revealed anywhere that the Komplete installer would ask you where you want to put the Sample Data, so I wasted some time customizing the install, only to have it prompt me for the Sample drive...

I'm not positive, but if I remember right, it seems like when I had used Guitar Rig 1.xx in a DP File, then updated to Guitar Rig 2 (and removed version 1) DP complained that GR1 wasn't there (which is understandable). It would be nice if they could write the plug ins so that installing Guitar Rig 3 would allow DP to transparently still open Guitar Rig 1 and 2 patched in version 3.

That's definitely true for GR, but I don't consider it the same as Kontakt so wasn't sure if one could draw assumptions from that.
Specifically, I had to start over from scratch with some-side-chaining usages of Guitar Rig 2 when v3 came along.

interesting to note that Sweetwater's "summer" catalogue is out now and they're offering Komplete 5 at $399, but not as a "sale" or limited-time price....just their regular price for Komplete 5!

I was told by a rep in July that they had run out of product. Obviously not catalogues, though.

I'm having some install issues too. I find it amazing sometimes the lack of basic instructions for these things. So I assumed I could install some stuff and come back later and do the rest but when you put in the later disc and click on the installer, it asks for the original "Disc 1 installer" every time.
Now I'm sure I could just copy the sample files over (as in: drag and drop - is that what I'm supposed to be doing??) but then why is there an installer on each content disc?
So....you go back to disc 1 and it starts installing everything all over again, taking hours! I've had to go through this twice (I had a power outage the second time!) and even if you chose custom install you have to go back through each disc consecutively to get up the the spot at which you were last.
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong here but the lack of installation instructions/ guidelines is baffling to me.

Not sure if dragging the samples will work on this as there are so many different instruments each having different format, some samples some not, all played through the K 3.5 player. Could get dicey.

Thanks, man. Yeah, that's what I thought so I avoided it. I guess it's just better to do it in one fell swoop. Seems like it should be more flexible.
