I don't have any SSL plugins, but I have SSL 4000 clones :)

4 channels of SSL stereo mix bus compression! Yes, they can make any skinny sound phat, and warm. I modified it by also adding transformers at the output stage.

The compressor is cloned/based from an old SSL4044E desk, dating back from '85. The SSL mixbus compressor is an integral part of the mixer's main quad fader and autofade system - cards 82E26 and 82E27.

And forgive my ignorance...What is ColorTone, WUP, and PoCo? I await knowledge!
Colortone is a new plug-in by tritonedgital. It is a convolution plug in that samples real hardware and gives you the same result in a plug in. Basically a modeler (however you spell that) of sorts. I don't know exactly what WUP stands for, but I know they're talking about Waves annual fees just to use their product and get their updates. PoCo is TC electronics "powercore." - I think that's what it is.

BTW, what other "great" compressor plug ins are there if not Waves or UAD-1? I was just about ready to by a quad G5, and quit using my UAD-1 for the time being, but then I saw all this crap about Waves - the WUP, and the 512 buffer minimum. I was going to get the waves plugs, but now I'm not sure. Sounds like a whole lot of problems, and I'm not sure I want to support them with these business tactics. But, what else is there in the way of good sounding compressors? Maybe the URS stuff?

Some like the Sony Oxford stuff- Dynamics, limiter etc.
McDsp is usable. Bombfactory not the latest greatest but some usefulness. Doesn't TC electronics have a mastering limiter?

Lot's of raves about the wave's, but so were there about channel strip 6 years ago- and now it sits on the shelf.
Will digital plugins actually reach a maturity (like say, word processors seem to have), or will the cycle of last years plugin being made obsolete by a new plugin continue forever?

I finally tried the SSL plugs.
Damn.......this is a tough purchase call for me.

First of all these emulations sound good.....very good.
I'm very familiar with SSL consoles and have recorded and mixed on them as a major label signed producer since 94'. These emulations are just about spot on.
I would need to be in a G series Room to do a true A/B but Damn, they sound like the real deal.

What makes this a tough purchase call is I can just about get the same sound with my UAD precision EQ, and Fairchild 670 on my stereo bus if I mix ITB. (It's not exactly the same, but I like what I hear) I use similar combinations when I mix OTB using stereo stems.
The SSL channel emulation is very cool but a bit of a CPU hog. Don't look to use it on all your tracks unless you're running on a G5 quad. I got 14 stereo track instances with a 85% cpu hit on my dual 1.8. 24 mono tracks with a 85% hit. This doesn't leave much room for the infamous DP cpu spikes.

All that said, if you want a great SSL emulation these are the current winners. Metric Halo's channel strip sucks compared to these (Sorry Splinter  ) I used them back in the OS9 days and hated the eq and gate on them.
I like others in this forum hate WUP. I have a Gold Bundle with Renn MAX and doubt that I upgrade them. The only plugin I use religously is the Renn Comp. Everything else got replaced by my UAD plugs which I love.
I'm not trying to be a Waves hater. They make good plugins especially the L2, L3, Linear EQ, and The Renn. bundle.
However, thier update program is extortion like........anyway

Did I mention that UAD has partnered up with Neve and is currently emulating Neve ummm..........check it out for yourselves.

I love Neve 8)
UAD might be the best place to put my money. They haven't let me down yet.

I'd love to buy this bundle. But I do not like the WUP policy. It locks people into a very expensive support contract. I like Waves plugins, but I won't buy another bundle from them until they get rid of WUP.

Why get the WUP anyway? I still use Waves vs 4 Mastering and Renn bundles under Tiger. Sounds good; many instances and doesn't crash.

IF it didn't run I probably would do a simple upgrade for compatibility but no WUP.

Is the 512 minimum buffer true with the waves stuff? Read that in another thread.

This might be true, but I've never run into any problems.
When I'm at the mixing stage I using a 1024 buffer size.

What is funny to me is your response to the SSL plugins is similar to mine almost exactly.. LOL same with that Channelstrip crap. It was hype when it came out but lost it's savor fast Dont think I have touched it in 5 years. The ren bundle is all I use from waves and even then on rare occassions Rvox cuz I like the over easy gate, but the SSL gates are gonna replace that puppy. As much as I hate waves I am setting up my purcahse. I have a John Sayers designed studio and in my room these things sound just like what I was used to on the old SSL 6000G and 4000E I grew up on....

Did my own test, I had 18 instances of the E seires Strip CPU at 60% on my Dual 2.0
8 - stereo, 10-mono was my test.

System started acting ugly at that point....

We might have to spend that chump change (cuz you are a chump if you pay it. LOL) for the intel versions.....

Great minds hear alike

I'm at the point of considering the purchase now.
Today, I like you remixed a couple of songs using them and like the results so far. When I compared the new mixes to the old ones they were not dramatically better, but better just the same. More punch over all. (That Bus Comp. is Nice) Still don't know if it justifies the price at this point. Like I said in a previous post, I'm more of a Neve guy and the UAD emulations might be more of what I'm looking for. Then again I guess it would be nice having the best of both worlds.........
