Maybe I am wrong but it seems like DVD-A is going away. . .I don't see it in the stores any more -- nor am I seeing new DTS releases either

Seeing more of those Dual Disc thingys which are AC3/Dolby Digital 5.1. For that I would guess Apple DVD Studio would be the way to go.
it is bizarre, i noticed they are GONE too... not that there was much of anything i would of bought when they were in the stores. im dying for some great surround discs to listen to at home.

i do think the dualdisc is the future of DVD releases... i saw some of those in the stores, but they are so intermingled in the CD's i have a hard time finding them. would be nice if they had their own section.

as for 10.2!?! good luck setting that up, stick with 5.1. some receivers have 7.1... i dont know why DP has 10.2 aside from two 5.1 mixes possibly? or just the ability like someone said for "special installations".
dual gHz, OSX 10.3.9, DP 4.6, PSP plugs [then a load of nice hardware]

Hey! Will see !!!! I agree that 5.1 is enough for right now .....

I got hard time in setting up my studio to be abble to get ready to 5.1 all the time .....I have just ordered a DTS-610 from Creative in order to be abble to keep it simple to do the mixing ....

This box , I hope will help me to get my mixes good enough to put on a dvd or a cd any project by using headphones .....

DualDisc IMHO is not a format, it's a package, sandwiching together a DVD and a non-Red Book compliant, not necessarily a CD ;)

Other than releases on the Sony-related labels, all DualDiscs I've seen have DVD-A content on the DVD side.

Some unbelievable DVD-A/DualDiscs released in the past year or so - the *entire* REM catalog (DVD-A + CD packages), the *entire* Talking Heads catalog (DVD-A/"CD" DualDisc package, called the "Brick"), Jackson Browne's "Running On Empty" (DVD-A + CD package), and the unbelievable Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings "Complete Score" (DVD-A + 3CD box set). Let's not also forget the EMI/DTS Signature Series Bowie DVD-A releases that just came out for "David Bowie Live" and "Stage."

Lots of good stuff out there. The retailers just haven't a clue how to display these things. Most of the releases are now mixed in with the regular CDs, so it's real infuriating trying to find what's on hi-res.

Thanks for the heads up -- I think I am just gonna find an online dealer who has a clue about these things. So far no luck.

I would love it if you would post a review of this box when you get it. I read the info on the Creative site and it sounds pretty interesting. THANKS!

Shure !!!! I am planning to route the ouputs from my system to the analog input of the DTS-610 and from the optical output of that same DTS-610 to my SONY surround headphones ....
As soon as I got that , I will make a report ....

That creative encoder may be good for monitoring, but what about encoding for disc? AFAICT, there is no facility for capturing the DTS stream to disk to make cds, dvds etc.

capturing the DTS stream? from an external box you mean? i know you can encode DTS from a 5.1 AIFF mix file set. just like DVDSP does AC3 except the software for DTS is far more $$$,

insofar as i'm aware, that is correct. from what i understand, the creative box allows you to get around playback of copy-protected material...you could bet the powers that be would have a lawsuit going so fast it'd make your head spin if there actually was a hardware means of capturing/encoding said stream to dvd.

afaik, the only way to crunch surround to dvd is via dvd studio pro or discwelder, or some like utility. if you're not too hung up on the dvd format, doesn't mp4/quicktime support multichannel audio also?

however, for monitoring, the box is a good idea...afaik, dolby digital and dts are compressed formats, so it's best to monitor through the compression to see exactly what the end user playback will sound like...

anyone know of an "encode-then-decode" plug or hardware to monitor matrixed formats (prologic, 6.1, etc)? for these formats, it's ESPECIALLY crucial...also, does dvd studio pro encode prologic, or only dolby digital stereo/5.1? discwelder?
nuendo has (had?) an lcrs monitoring plug as described above, and samplitude could burn lcrs cd's, but no plug to monitor...alas, now i am pc-less...so what are my options now?

this is a cool thread!

First of all , I do music for the fun of it .

So even if I had no software to encode it , I would use it to have fun ...
I am lurking at the possibility to get my friends doing music with me a pair of Sony headphone and try to make realtime music in surround ..
Why not !!!

DVD pro does only Dolby Digital , I think
Discwelder is for non compressed surround ...
For the PC one's , I imagine you could use VirtualPC to get it done ...

Hey! guys !!!!
I have received my DTS-610 from Creative
First my Logitech surround system does not recognize the digital signal from the DTS-610 optical or Coax .....
Secondly , it does work with my Sony surround headphone but as of right not the battery is recharging .....So , as soon as I got it recharged , I will make test with my own surround project and let anyone interested know how it is !!!!

DTS-610 !!!!

Post by Aramis »

Ok now I have listened to my project in surround with this DTS box and my Sony surround headphone and it does work very well ...
For now two little thing that bothers me ...
If my DP output is very loud , I got distorsions in the basses .
Lowering the main output has solved this ...
Now , my appreciation of the surround field in such a context ...
I have observed that without an image like in a movie to add for the realism
it is not as convincing as I would have tought ....specificaly for the front to back aspect .....
So in my setup it will be usefull for doing the mixing but I know I will have to do the final touch on speakers ....
