Karl, it is my understanding that from a data security standpoint journaling is appealing, but from a drive that is used in high performance applications such as audio, journaling slows the process making it undesireable.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Because of real or imagined heat issues with G5s, does it raise the internal temp. with the extra hardware inside? Plus, won't the power supply work harder and generate more heat? Those were my thoughts when I first started buying externals in the pre-G series days. But, if you can make it work, more power to ya'.

Well, I was mistaken,

Mezzo has a less expensive version of backup software for DP users. It is called Mezzo Mirror and does what regular Mezzo does- but doesn't include backup to tape. Not a problem since most of us backup to FW or CD/DVD. It sells for $229 and is made to work with DP.

BTW I'm not a salesman- just a convert. I thought the functionality was too expensive at $399 for "backup software."

Using Temperature Monitor.....

CPU A - 114 - 122 F
CPU B - 111 - 117 F
Drive Bay 85.1
Main Logic Inlet 71.8 F
Main Logic Ambient 77.0 F
Logic Board Backside 76.5 F
Processor Card A Ambient 81.0 F
Processor Card B Ambient 79.7 F


All these temps are within 1-5 degree of where they were before I installed the Drives.

CPU A was 115- 116 F
CPU B was 109-110 F

That is a small temp increase.

Not like My Old G4 that idled at 130 F on the processors.

Upper Limit on Proc A = 140 F
Upper Limit on Proc B = 134.6

SO I am stil 20 degrees or so below the upper limit.

snicka, this is exactly what I have learned. Journaling is great for your boot drive because there are a zillion little files on it and journaling keeps track of them in case of a kernel panic or power outtage or whatever. Because audio and video files are big(usually), journaling just kind of subtly bogs down the drive and uses a little space. It's not much a performance hit, but it is a performance hit. I have heard that it really isn't that necessary for media drives.

This is from a Final Cut Pro site and apparently straight from Apple:

As Apple writes:

"If your [computer] contains high-bandwidth usage data files, such as large video, graphics, or audio files, you may want to weigh the benefits of using journaling against the performance needed to access your data. In most cases, the impact of journaling upon data access performance are unnoticeable to users, but its implementation may not be practical for [computers] where data access demands outweigh its benefits."

My recommendation? Leave journaling turned on for your boot disk and turn it off for all secondary drives (both internal and external) that are used to store media files. For external drives that store data, not media, turn journaling on.

Yes it's safer to have journaling "ON" - which by the way is the the default
behaviour of OS-X.

Journaling causes a very slight overhead in normal use of your system.
( as Snicka points out )

That's whay some people turn it off, to save on the cpu-cycles, - may
be necessary if you feel that your computer is straining just close to the
limit of it's capabilities.

However you dont save very much that way.
( consider buying a faster computer if that's the case )
Many people follow "Hammerman's" recommendation.

Internal SATA for recording & mixing and external LaCie FW for temporary backups & exporting / importing sessions to / from other studios.

Libaries & sound banks are located on the boot disk.

Thanks for the info on the journaling - where have you guys found apps to measure your CPU's temp? Also I wanted to throw in an endorsement for Retrospect. I've used it for over 10 years & never (knocking on wood) lost any data. It creates very detailed catalogs for easy retrieval. I don't think it is very expensive either (I think I paid like $89 for it)

I backup on dvd and I copy the projects on a PC thru a 1 gigs network ....
