Thank you for the info, that's a already lot of food for thoughts. So the bottom line so far is
yes, you can still do it
no, you don't have to
it depends on the music
if it sounds good it is good
That's fine
Thank you for mentioning plug-ins, I will check them out

BTW:
https://www.bozdigitallabs.com Mongoose and Pan Knob will do the mono under a definable set freq you can dial in! Pan Knob was just updated a few days ago...
Yes! Pan Knob is the one. I see I get a free update to v.2. Thanks! Haven’t had much call for it in the last 2 1/2 years but one never knows. If you need it, a definite bargain @ the $19 sale price.
El Clappo, OTOH, made a few tracks and has paid for itself many times over.
Their Width Knob is a freebie. Contrary to its name, it does not widen. Instead it narrows till it sums to mono and, if you keep turning, it flips the stereo image. I’ve used it to narrow piano and drum VIs before panning so that they sound more natural in an ensemble. In the real world, pianos and drums do not take up the entire sound stage. Not bad for free.

Hmmmm…. Nothing on the site about M1 compatibility. Guess I’ll have to inquire.

Unfortunately, Clappo, Snippet and Stomp are not yet Apple Silicon Native and, on my system, don't work within DP Native. So they are, hopefully temporarily, sidelined.
Boz Pan Knob v2 is now AS-Native.

Thanks, I suspected as much.
I bet that Width Knob, likewise, is not yet Native. A one-trick pony but it’s a neat trick if you try to create natural sound stages as I often do. Since the topic is Mono, I thought it worth mentioning.

Please note DJ Swivel plugins are currently not officially compatible with Monterey and we strongly recommend that Mac users postpone updating to the new operating system.
Our Development team are thoroughly testing to qualify our products on the new operating system. Once that work is completed, we will be able to confirm with confidence whether or not our products will require updates to ensure compatibility.
If you have already updated your system to macOS Monterey, we ask for you to revert to an officially supported operating system. If you need assistance reverting your system to a previous version, please see this article, or contact Apple directly. When macOS Monterey is officially supported with DJ Swivel Plugins we’ll ensure to make an official announcement.
Perhaps this is why it is on sale...? I look forward to using it when it is M1/Monterey compatible and hopefully native.
Well I’m still on my MacPro5,1 12-core running Mojave for at least three more months and I’ve been using it for quite awhile. The overall widening when used judiciously sounds really good to my ear. Hopefully by the time I can afford to make the jump to a Mac Studio it will have been updated.

I definitely need to go download the Boz Digital panner. Probably a good time to check if I’m up to date on some or their other plugs.
I did find a much more in-depth plug it appears for panning based on frequency (as I was searching in vain for another panner plug I’d seen recently but couldn’t remember where) by NuGen Audio but it’s expensive. Like $129. Meh.

Regarding Boz Pan Knob 2, I went ahead and bought it. Just now decided to mess with it on my main stereo buss just to test it out on a very small test project with only two VI tracks, and discovered that if I engaged the crossover during playback I got a fullscale overload on the meters. If I stopped playback, I got the same thing and it stopped briefly, but I still get crackling when the crossover is engaged. I'll have to troubleshoot this some more.

Okay... this seems to be happing only when I put it on a stereo track. Perhaps it's not meant to do this, but seems like I might want to do that at some point to control the WAY a stereo track is panned. If someone who has this plug in could check this that would be great.
