Same here. I had to pull a synth module to make it work. Now it’s just sidelined.

FWIW, I now leave a 1/2 rack space open on each side of my two 16As and 828ES units. I end up losing 2U of rack space, and it looked a little funky at first… BUT I’ve had no heat related issues since even if I leave the units on for extended periods. They run warm (as they typically do), but not extremely hot as they used to.

I can’t recommend spacing them enough.

(And in retrospect I feel like a bit of an idiot for not realizing this sooner. The complete loss of my 1248 may have been related to this. It was an expensive lesson.)

I recommend 1 rack space 'cause whilst 1/2 will work, there's a certain amount of radiation involved and in my experience 1 full space does the job in all but the most-demanding of scenarios.

They should build thermal sensors into these units and make the readouts available on the web-based setup pages. Better still if the units threw a flag should heat levels exceed a threshold for some predetermined amount of time.

I can’t imagine that would be very costly to add.

You know you can just move somewhere with a cooler climate.

I remember someone supplying plates that are 2 units high. You attach a 1U item to it and that puts an extra ½ space above and below. Took up a lot of rack space though.

If you leave space above, you could stick/bolt some heat sinks on top of the unit; might help quite a bit.
