Thanks, Mike. That is basically what I've been trying. The installation seems to go fine, but then the system automatically boots from my internal drive and the external installation never finishes (all it contains is a folder with system data.
I've tried it with various formatting schemes. All with the same results. I suspect it may be the drive enclosure. I'm trying to install on an 840 EVO in a 4 bay USB-3 Icydock enclosure. I have a spinner in this enclosure for Time Machine as well and it works fine.
