I would freeze if they did subscriptions. Not everyone makes a living on DP, in fact, some of us are retired on fixed income. I would never buy into it by any company ever.

I make part of my living with DP and wouldn’t move to subscription. Not for DP, Finale, Photoshop or any other software. Updates. Sure. Lease? Forgetaboutit.

Again, not all subscription models are the same. The worst kind has the current version you're using stop working once you stop paying, monthly subscriptions like Slate, Plug in Alliance etc. etc.

Bitwigs model isn't bad though, it's more of a way for them as developers to keep a more steady income rather than every 2-4 years getting a huge lump sum as they drop a big upgrade with a dozen new features and bug fixes. So it should theoretically not suffer from a .0 release slew of tiny bugs, ever. You don't get punished for not upgrading your subscription so you could easily just pay $150 every two years and get the same sort of features as someone who did pay yearly with a 'frozen' version for a year. The downside is if there's a bug that they don't or can't address, and it goes on for more than one payment etc. but that's true of the traditional model of an upgrade every 2-4 years.

Anyway, glad to hear an update is due soon on DP, and I'm of course curious if they add in any improved features like they mentioned.

If a lumpy income stream is the issue, a 20 minute conversation with an accountant can clear that up.

That would seem to be similar to WUP. You can get on and off WUP as you please. I've gone from Waves Ren V4 to a larger mix of V9 and V10 Waves plugins and only paid WUP for one year.

More generally, I'm not sure there is a rational reason to prefer one model over another aside from understanding whether it will cost you more or less. Even with traditional approach, you can buy a version and be left with bugs until the next paid update.

I know Mr.s Waits, the piano has been drinking, not you!

As far as the update is concerned. My guess is the next two weeks. It's officially been six months on November 1st since the last update.

Great news about the update.. I think I've experienced a few of those bugs they're talking about!

As far as a subscription model, I don't think MOTU will do it with DP anytime soon. Why should they? Whenever they need money they charge us an upgrade and we happily pay it, right? And most longtime DP users probably wouldn't go for it anyway.. I know I wouldn't.

Photoshop and Protools can get away with those forced subscriptions because they are perceived as the only game in town for "true" professionals. Of course, a substantial part of that subscription money "advance" people give them, goes into the assured continuance of that perception.

Wow, I shared a response I got from a MOTU rep... I come back a few days later and it's turned ugly. Sorry I even bothered.

Not ugly, just speculation and people get testy when you question their "best guesses." It only gets ugly when people start toss ad hominins around.

When is that update coming out again?

Well, considering they offered to "help me roll back to DP9" (which a back-and-forth would take a few days if I were a layman), I would expect more than a few weeks. But the fact that they were confident enough to say something was coming soon makes me think it's not THAT far out, otherwise they'd be better off stringing me along without saying anything.

This is why I was saying I was surprised the 'one year subscription model' that Bitwig is doing is even happening. NI tried that years ago and failed. You cannot predict or know when or iff a fix, or slight new feature tweak messes with other code, and knocks out a few peoples setups, so predicting when you will be 'done' with software is more than hard. Sounds to me like they've done most of the work on bugs they planned on squashing and whatever minor improvements they're doing, but that code might have to be tweaked for some set ups... That could be a week, or three months.. :banghead:
