That's exactly it.

Both will install as Digital Performer. Rename the 8 folder as Digital Performer 8.07. When you install 9, rename that folder as Digital Performer 9.52 (if that's the version you are using). The dot . is important in the file name, apparently, or the folder will be overwritten. Subsequent installs will be also named Digital Performer — go ahead and trash them after installing. Your Digital Performer 8.07 and Digital Performer 9.52 folders will remain. You can make alias shortcuts to both in the toolbar.

Again, the latest installer will overwrite shared resources in a different folder. So, if you have both 8 and 9 working properly, good for you. If not, you know what to do.

Because of a client I had using DP 7.24, I played that game with 9.02 and 7.24 (one wouldn't run 64 bit plugs while the other wouldn't run 32 bit only plugins). When I upgraded to High Sierra and 7.24 would no longer run, I cut that guy loose till he upgraded to DP 9.
It doesnt create a folder over here Mike, it just dumps the DP app into the Applications folder. Or am I missing the point?

Anyway, just as an update, I went ahead and did it over the weekend (before reading this) and, of course, it broke my Powercore PCI card in DP8, although Powercore was still available in DP9. What the heck? And this is the plug that I use all the time, which I couldnt afford to lose in DP8, because it runs with latency in DP9. So now I'm screwed everywhere.

Not knowing what's going on, I spend a couple of days pondering restoring select files from Time Machine, which I dont even know how to do, (didnt want to restore everything and lose new emails, new stuff on the desktop, etc.), and having a TechLink chat with Travis at DP (a very knowledgable chap, who also talked about the renaming thing, by the way), during the course of which he suggested that perhaps DP8 was running 64bit, and perhaps Powercore is 32. Ding! ding! ding! we have a winner!

Somehow, during the installation process, DP8 had "flipped" from 32 to 64. (I know it was running 32 before the installation since I've been using it with Powercore forever. Couldnt have been in 64 mode)

It's been running fine for so long I had forgotten all about this incompatibility till Travis brought it up. (Very knowledgable chap.) So I switched it back, and all is hunky dory again.

The point of all this foolishness, if anyone cares, was to test a Waves plug in DP9 to see if it could replace Powercore, at which point I could upgrade systems and move forward...a little bit, slowly, and with trepidation. Turns out the plug Waves sold me (after an online chat. Not my fault) isnt compatible with 10.9.5. So I spent about a week spinning my wheels and got absolutely no place. I'm back at square one. My head hurts.

I know, TMI, but once again I just felt like sharing. And thanks, gents for all the advice, and the heartwarming compassion.

Well you certainly don't have to restore the entire system from Time Machine. That's kind of the point with Time machine. You can be as selective as you want to be.

I'd restore the DP app, the audio folder in my system and user folders, the preferences folder, again in the user and system folders, but just the user folder.

To do that, ENTER time machine. Navigate to the folder(s) in question were changed due to the installation (you have to do that one at a time). Select RESTORE and either REPLACE or KEEP BOTH. If you keep both (recommended in a case like this) you'll have to rename the current folder to a temp name (or move it to the desktop) and rename the restored folder to the current folder's name. Then restart. Ideally, that should return you to the state of your plugins, DP, and preferences from just before the recent installation.

You DO NOT need to restore the entire system or user library or any other significant number of files except the ones that may have been changed.

You might also have a look at your SYSTEM FOLDER/Library/Receipts to see if there is any info on what was installed.

Good luck.

Or am I missing the point?
Yes, you missed my point. All the folders I mentioned sit in Applications except shared resources.

No matter, you found out what you needed to know.

Still dont get it. The installation of DP9 didnt put any folders in Applications, just the app itself.

As you say though, no matter.

That — but I should have indicated so instead of calling them folders. Good catch.

Why? Ok, I did it, but what does that mean/show/indicate?

I'm still at a loss here. Total Luddite.

Sorry for reviving an older thread. Jumping back into the music thing. Been using DP 9/ 9.52 for a bit now and just got the upgrade to 10. I have a few older projects that I want to work on. I've read about SDII issues. If I install 10 with 9, can the certain functionality be lost be explained further?

Thanks in advance!
mikehalloran wrote:Shared components are overwritten by whichever version was installed last. Certain DP 9 functionality is no longer available after 10 is installed. Once 9 is reinstalled, parts of 10 are disabled and so on.

There’s far less difference between 9 and 8 in that regards. Some users find no problem switching back and forth; others do. YMMV

My preference has always been to install new versions of DP (full versions, not point upgrades) on their own boot drive/partition This completely avoids any conflicts that might arise from a shared resource and also allows me to keep a known-good boot drive/DP combo intact when I upgrade DP.

Just sayin'.

It depends a lot on what the two versions are. There are always conflicts, but sometimes they can be listed and dealt with. But it looks like installing V10 when you have V9 on the same partition leads to problems that are difficult to anticipate and manage.

As per above, I have a permanent test volume/partition when new versions of the OS and important apps are installed. At some point, if things are working well on the test partition, the main volume/partition is updated to newer versions, and the test volume/partition moves on to the "next big thing".

It seems ok to have multiple versions of Logic and Mixbus on the same partition (they need different application file names), but usually, not DP.
