Of course you can run from spinners. SSDs are not required, just recommended because they give such a nice performance boost Even if you don't move to SSDs, you may have to re-authorize a few apps or plugins after doing the CPU upgrade. As I recall, BFD and, possibly, DP were the only I had to re-authorize when I swapped a CPU tray between Mac Pros. And I have a pretty fair number of VIs and plugins myself.dave pine wrote:just ot be clear, i really realy realy don't want to install ssd's, i have hundreds of plugins and virtual instruments, i don't want to have to reinstall everything, is that possible with this upgrade?
You might try a simple clone of your system drive to a big SSD. You'll probably find very little needs to be re-authorized. Try it. You'll like it.

Hi Dave
I'm not sure why you're concerned about SSDs... they're simply faster than regular "spinner" drives...much faster.
If you clone your current bootup disk to an SSD (using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper for example) and then use the SSD as your startup disk, you will definitely experience a verrrry noticeable overall performance boost.... regardless of the CPU upgrade
Trust us here... you *do* want this ( :
I can't wait to hear how you enjoy your upgrade(s) .... it really will feel like a new machine
Onward and upward Dave ( :

Re: my first day with dp10
yeh, i forgot i own a nice cloning machine, works great, could you point me to the ssd's i'd need to replace my old drives?
what size etc....
thanx, i dont do this kinda thing very much, i'm good at it, but i'm no computer nerd

Not sure what your cloning machine is…. but it sounds cool ( : Personally I would go with good software for cloning ...Carbon Copy Cloner for me has been stellar for many years
I think you’ll need to work out what you need in terms of disk size(s).. but normal good practice is to have a bootup disk...that is your system disk …with all your apps…like DP…
Then another, separate, drive for DP projects and other audio or video projects that need to stream data quickly without interrupting the system/startup drive ….. audio really wants to stream from a separate drive from your startup disk
Then you should also have *another* drive...or drives... for your VIs and sample libraries…
So that’s 3 drives you should/could be using to get the best performance … Boot/startup disk, audio disk, and library disk(s)
IMO, at the least, you should have an SSD boot disk… it’s really a no brainer… everything opens in a snap… once you try it you will never go back
The audio disk should be fine with a regular spinner HD for normal audio work …but… again… an SSD gives a great boost to responsiveness
And then the disk(s) for VIs or sample libraries .... well....for sure you won’t go wrong if you invest in SSD(s) for all that… I guess it really comes down to your priorities and budget… SSD prices are not what they were a few years ago…. the point is that SSDs shred … use them for everything if you can! ( :
You’ve ordered the CPU upgrade….great!… at least get an SSD for your startup disk… it will take it all to the next level man!! ( :
I hope this helps Dave
Cheers

Re: my first day with dp10
yeh, i have my startup system disk, have to check the size, can i go larger if i clone it?......a 2t disk for dp projects, another 2t disk for vi's, and another 1.5t for some back stuff, my cloner works with both the mini ssd's and regular sizes

Re: my first day with dp10
You can clone to a larger drive but not to one smaller than the amount of data on the source drive. I'd recommend a Samsung 860 EVO or Crucial MX500 SSD. Here are links to 1TB versions of each:
https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Inch-Int ... 446&sr=8-1
https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX500-NA ... 186&sr=8-1
Once you experience SSD performance, you won't look back. Spinners are still the best choice for backup and long-term storage.
I don't know what a "cloning machine" is, but Carbon Copy Cloner software is solid. Super Duper is what I use, and it works great, too.
You can put an SSD in the second optical bay in your Mac Pro... a set of power and SATA connectors are waiting there for you. I moved my optical drive to the lower optical bay; it works nicely as a shelf and can support single or many SSDs. Unless you move your Mac around, no need to fasten SSDs down. Just rest 'em on the optical drive and get to work!

I dealt with this twice.dave pine wrote:just ot be clear, i really realy realy don't want to install ssd's, i have hundreds of plugins and virtual instruments, i don't want to have to reinstall everything, is that possible with this upgrade?
First, on an earlier Mac where I ran out of space on the main drive. I found that almost all plugins worked fine by the use of symbolic links in the Library folder on the main drive pointing to plugins on an external drive. You'd want the version of the Symbolic Link maker that works as a Service when you right click on a file or folder, not the version that operates as an App. In almost every case, plugins loaded just as they had before. Some VIs have to be told where the sample are, and that had to be reset.
The second instance was moving to a new Mac with an internal SSD and a new external SSD for sample libraries. Migration Assistant failed, and I would have had to re-authorized most of them anyway. I installed everything from scratch. So my approach was to only install those I knew I would use, and then wait to install others if and when I decided to use them. I started with a list of well over 800 plugins and ended up installing about 180, of which 50 are the Plug&Mix bundle. There must have been 300 that I couldn't even remember getting, or what they do; about another 300 that looked fine at the time, but were never used.
Even so, this took a very long time, with calls and messages to a lot of tech support offices many of which were problems associated with moving to Mojave or authorizers that had not been updated.
I think it was worth it. The SSDs are so much faster. More than once, I've loaded a VI patch with a very large set of samples, and saw nothing happen. I thought it was due to an error, but it just loaded so fast, I didn't see it happen.
