This is a real PITA.

Looks like Macworld cheaped out on their test model, if they got one at all. They didn't talk much if at all about the i7 models. The initial Geekbench scores puts those at about 24,000 to 25,000, compared to my prehistoric iMac at about 9,000. It compares well with the current Mac Pro, although well below the high end iMac Pros.

Nice benchmark; shame about the RAM

If you don't break the MM as you update the RAM, I don't believe Apple can void your warranty, unless the RAM somehow damages the MM. See: Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act...

I found this at https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/arti ... re-illegal
"Generally, the MMWA prohibits warrantors from conditioning warranties on the consumer's use of a replacement product or repair service identified by brand or name," the FTC wrote. This means that there can be no such thing as an "unauthorized" repair or an "unauthorized" replacement part. The statute itself states "for example, a provision in the warranty such as, 'use only an authorized ABC dealer' or 'use only ABC replacement parts,' is prohibited where the service or parts are not provided free of charge pursuant to the warranty."
I don't think Apple is handing out free RAM.

A bunch of folks at MacRumors have already upgraded their new machines without issue.

Consensus:
If you only need 16GB RAM, just buy it from Apple when you buy the MM.

For 32GB, buy 8 from Apple, remove and sell for $30 to OWC, replace with Patriot for a tad over $200 or Crucial for a little more.

If you buy AppleCare, keep the original RAM for 3 years. If not, keep it for one. Throw it back in if the machine has to go to Apple for repair. What’s the fuss?

Apple absolutely follows California law on these type of things even if some writers disagree.

I wouldn't think twice about taking it on. The first one would take awhile. Being the one-armed guy, magnetized screwdrivers are a must for me.

I wonder if the RAM sticks have to be matched. Could I replace one 4 with a 32? I suppose OWC will figure that out.

If you are referring to the law I mentioned, it's Federal law.

Also, the 32GB Sticks are reportedly prohibitively expensive, but it is my understanding you can use mismatches-size RAM, possibly with a nominal performance hit.

True. I just checked OWC. They're already listing upgrades for the new Mini. It's cheaper to order from Apple with 32G than to buy a single 32G stick from OWC. But cheaper to buy 2 16s from OWC than to get 32 from Apple

Apple does.

CA Dept. of Consumer Affairs is tighter than the Feds on many issues and this is one of them.

It’s already known that the new Mini does not require matched RAM.
