Try the "zoom to selection" command. Also the "zoom back" (and zoom forward) command which steps you back through previous zoom levels. Also, there are 3 zoom levels you can set and assign to key combinations. I edit MIDI mostly in the Sequence editor. Not sure if these commands work in the MIDI editor.

Ya know, yesterday I actually did use your tip of expanding a track while shrinking the rest, used in conjunction with 'w' to apply to a few tracks at once.
