Yikes, that is scary and unacceptable.
I have at least noted marked improvement in overall performance/speed and handling of SSD's.

. Sounds like 10.11.6 is to be avoided at all costs.
No. I have a Repair Partition that's 10.11.2. Identical behavior. I never said that this DU problem was a 10.11.6 issue—only that Disk Utility
still sucks. My son's-in-law remarks about it being broken were made months ago.

Only that this is undocumented. That
is most unacceptable.
When I ran the SMART test on these older drives in TechTool Pro, they didn't have as many parameters as the newer drives. There's an incompatibility between these and El Cap. I could read and copy from them but could not write, delete files, erase nor reformat—I had lost all permissions and privileges in El Cap and Disk Utility couldn't fix them (and made them worse in the process). Since I was preparing these for archival storage, there was no data loss.
Had I known, I wouldn't have wasted so much damned time and just wiped the drives.
The only reason I got into this was that I purchased SampleTank Max and Miroslav 2 last weekend. They only make the sound libraries available for download for six months. I just wanted some place to archive the 100G download and other VIs and older installers while I'm at it—I exclude my VIs and installer backups from Time Machine. I did find a couple of drives new enough to work so I'm good for now.
