Never used 10.7, but have been using 10.8 since the .3 release with great success.

10.8 won't run on my old MacMini either. As you say, it will run 10.7, but it runs hotter, the fans start up sooner, and it wants more RAM, but there is no advantage I can see to having 10.7 or 10.6, so it stays at 10.6.8

I've spent 'some' time lately trying to install 10.8 on the Mac Mini 1,1 with Core2Duo cpu upgrade...

I didn't realize you have a Mini 1.1 upgraded to a 2.1. Yea... the first Mini to support 10.8-10.10 is the early 2009 3.1.

I have had mixed results with MLPostFactor. Since Terminal commands are involved, I always copy and paste if possible – sometimes, no matter how carefully you type, mistakes can be made. If you can't keep a web page open, copy the commands to a Text page that you can have open.

Although I put the downloaded ML installer in the applications folder, MLPostFactor v0.3 says
I should put it there...

To my knowledge, the only difference between the 1.1 and 2.1 is the CPU which, as I understand it, is a simple chip swap. But since the Boot ROM says 1.1, there may be more to this issue.

On a Mini 1.1 Core Duo, you are not supposed to be able to install 10.7 – unlike the Core Duo iMac and MacBook. It needs the Core 2 Duo and is now limited to 10.7. Again, this is unlike the other Core 2 Duos that can run 10.8-10.10.

So yes, it is probably a Boot ROM issue but I have no idea what you can do about it. It is possible that the 2.1 Boot ROM is more easily hacked.

My Minis were all G4s and I gave those away a few years ago.

but probably not reversable...
well, decisions...
I'll check out how it works with 10.7 first.

FWIW.... I use a 2009 Mac Mini with OSX 10.6.8 for a live show (playing back audio files that have to be triggered and mixed live while the action is going on... no 2 shows are the same.)

It's rock solid, and is used with Ableton Live for the show playback using Launchpad and another mixer/fader device. This year, I started using a new Behringer mixer with USB input/output to the Mac Mini, and it was excellent.

DP8 is loaded on the Mini in case I need it for an emergency. I compose the music back in my studio on DP8 and then put the files in Live for the show playback. (... I dread the thought of ever having to compose/arrange/edit in Ableton Live!) My studio computer is on OSX 10.8.7 right now.

Anyways, I can't see any need to upgrade the Mini to a different OSX version. As they say, if it works for live use, leave it alone!
