One more "gotta be something wrong" voice. I recently upgraded my 2010 5,1 to a 12-core 3.33ghz with 32gb of RAM, and it runs multiple instances of Kontakt, UVI Player and Omnisphere, including CineSamples instruments, all inside a DP project without breaking a CPU sweat. I haven't found its limit. So, yeah, there's something bad wrong in software. It would be a huge PITA, but I might be tempted to wipe the drive and start clean.
