I agree with the OP it is an annoying thing to have to remove from each folder title, and seems quite unnecessary.
It is pretty far down my list of things I hope they work on.

Hey! Be nice. We don't want to scare people off and tarnish the image of this board any more. I don't need angry people writing to MOTU about this place either. I think maybe "Project" is added because DP creates a folder with that appended to it and MOTU probably did this for clarity. You could write to them and suggest that be changed.

Actually, if you're looking for a reason to append "project" to the folder's name, it's simple. It distinguishes the FOLDER from the DP FILE within, which would otherwise have the same name. The "project" folder contains all of the project components, one of which is the DP project file. It's always made sense to me. YMMV
BTW, I often store other parts of a project in the project folder (related Finale files, artwork, MIDI files, etc.). DP has never minded me doing that. And...there's nothing unprofessional about the word project. Many companies use this term for ongoing "projects." A while back I worked on several "projects" for the US Army.
