My own personal go to vocal mic these days is the Peluso 22 47. I aso have the Peluso 22 251. But I find the 47 warmer. Both get that wonderful sheen on top. I also have the AEA R84. For smoky jazz vocals that's what I use.
I recently did a series of sessions at home and at a studio I frequent. I used the Telefunken Elam USA 251. All subsequent session we used the Peluso 22 47 because it just sounded way better on this vocalist.
You could say it's the poor man's U47. It definitely has a similar sonic thumbprint. It was modelled after it. But it has it's own sound. A great mic.

nice!
Im under the impression that a great mic and great preamp are like women .... some are better for different things. Depends on our mood? am i correct in this assumption?

Yes, microphones ARE very subjective....it's like ice-cream. You know, I like both chocolate and I do like vanilla, but most of the time I prefer to eat Mint Chocolate Chip. However sometimes, just sometimes it's peppermint that fills the craze, etc. It's not just the microphone, but also the signal path that has an impact on the sound. Do you want a big, rich tone? Or would you prefer clean gain? How about the mic, do you want coloration or are you looking for natural sound?
No matter what microphone I'm using for vocals, I'm going through one of my Focusrite Liquid Channels, this gives me SO much flexibility with basic EQ and a full pallette of compression options. My microphone of choice has been the Soundelux U99 as I do like a nice warm sound, with some top-end sparkle. Here's a good track to demo what I'm referring to on the U99. This is a very simple tune, but the mic fits this vocalist perfectly. I didn't have to EQ at all, just put him on the microphone and used a little compression out of the Liquid Channel using solely it's pre and compression emulation, recorded into ProToolsHD using the Liquid Channel's Converter. I'm a BIG Soundelux fan I might add, I'm about to get an E250 in the near future. I have access to many lines of high-end microphones, I keep going to Soundelux just about every single time.
FORGIVE me if there is too much bottom-end in the mix, I did something weird and was too lazy to fix it

I use a Tele U87 mostly. Found it at a post-mortem garage sale. The people that were selling it had no idea how much it's worth. Still in the original case.

Did anyone mention akg c1000s condensor? It's great for site work b/c it uses a 9v battery instead of phantom. I'm no pro, but it sounds great on vox and bluegrass guitar. glenn

jaffi - That's prett friggin' incredible man. Still in good shape? I'll give you $200 for it. That way you'll make a nice profit (300%!) and I can have a another great mic!
The pre is almost as important as the mic itself. I mainly use Millennia pres. I also use a Peavy VC/L-2 tube compressor. A little known early discontinued hit. My fav compressor for tracking vocals is the LA2A however. But I've done great things with the Milllennia TCL-2. A great opto compressor.

Yep, I walked up on it. Incredibly, this was the first and only garage sale I ever went to. I was with a friend and we were walking to the local watering hole in Pacific Beach, California. He needed a recliner and saw one at this garage sale. While he was doing that I went strolling around and saw a bunch of old analog gear. Me, having more experience with live sound and analog recording was game. Then that's when I saw it. The outside looked like crap, but I figured what the heck, I'll pick it up. When I asked how much, my nuts actually started tingling when they told me $50. I had like $20-$30 bucks. I got the rest from my friend and went to the bar( he never did get the recliner). Later I checked it out and saw that the capsule was still mint. It sounded completely awesome. This mic works on anything. Unfortunately I can't use it right now because I'm deployed in the Navy and mics are useless on a ship (too noisy). When I get back though, it's on. Plus, I'll have a bunch of money to spend on lots of new toys. What I have now is minimal, just so I can keep my engineering skills sharp while I'm at sea.
