Toast 11 exhibited a bit of weirdness. Nothing I haven't seen in earlier versions, actually. It worked fine but the buffer loaded slowly. When I was done, I had to force quit the app - which generated a crash report but I couldn't pinpoint the culprit.

I could not empty the Trash claiming an audio file I had auditioned and removed was still in use. The CD I loaded into my external drive would not mount. Re-booting solved this and another session went off without a hitch.

I have seen this behavior before but never in T-11. So, while it works, it's either a unique situation or time for an update.

I got a response from Audio Ease to get Snapper running again:

It looks like Apple updated the way some OS settings work without
keeping/moving the old settings...

In short, in order to function properly Snapper needs to be 'trusted'.
Please open your system preferences and then go to:
Security & Privacy > Privacy > Accessibility
Then hit the lock in the lower left corner to open it so you can make changes.
Then drag the Snapper application into the window (if it is not listed yet) and
make sure the check box is checked. Like on the attached picture.

That's it. Snapper should function again then.

I was just about to post this as well. SNAPPER'S BACK!

Here's how to get Snapper back working in Mac OS 10.9 (mavericks)

please open your System Preferences and then go to:
Security & Privacy > Privacy > Accessibility
Hit the lock
drag the Snapper application into the window (if it is not listed yet) and
make sure the check box is checked, like on the attached picture.

After you did this Snapper should work just fine.

That friend would be Jim Mitchell's wonderful little maintenance app, YASU.
I think there are a lot of us here who've used and relied on this for a more stable Mac for many years, now. But sadly, with the onset of Mavericks, he's retired it.

He's recommending going to Cocktail for maintenance tasks, but I took a look at it and it seems *way* more complicated than YASU. And you may not want "complicated" when you're setting up a maintenance app that will be messing under the hood!

I also took a look at Onyx's "Maintenance", but they're working on getting that Mavericks-ready.

So, a sad but fond farewell to YASU and looking for suggestions from anyone who's got recommendations other than those mentioned above?

Once I did maintenance tasks too. Now the only 2 maintenance tasks I have done for past years are:

1) after kernel panic- boot to single user mode and do fsck -fy
2) if stuff starts to act weird- repair preferences with disk utility

I have developed a strong feeling that many companies want to create a need for performing maintenance tasks and buy an app for those tasks. Many of these apps are just frontend to already existing features built in your system.

I don't think you need a replacement. Stuff we used to do, happens in OS X in background, or doesn't need to be done any more. You can use DiskUtility to do repair permissions before and after new installs and updates (which I think is probably more superstition than science in most cases), and to check your drives now and then. It's like cars -- Saturday mornings spent adjusting brake shoes and carburator vents, and gapping spark plugs are gone.

I made the jump to Mavericks and everything is working well.

Vienna Ensemble Pro is working fine after I did two things:

1. Update to the new version posted a few days ago

2. Delete all WayOutWare KikAxxe VI's and plug-ins (VST, AU)

I don't know if WayOutWare is still in business; they did a dodgy 64-bit port of TimeWARP 2600 that I have to pull back by over 30 dB to keep from getting digital overs, and never updated KikAxxe (I couldn't even get it to work in 32-bit mode towards the end).

Anyway, before deleting KikAxxe from my system, it was crashing on startup, without even so much as a crash log or warning. It simply said it couldn't create data directories etc. for it, as the product wants to use the rood directory on your system for everything.

Melodyne and 10.9 on my computer.


Singletrack 2.1.1: works as standalone and AU in DP8.05

Studio 3.2.2.2: error, discovers internal inconsistency and is forced restart. After restart same error.
Can anyone verify this?

Not sure if this was mentioned or not - Soundtoys Decapitator crashes DP (and apparently Logic) on mavericks - there is supposedly going to be a fix in the next few days from Soundtoys.

Agreed. Onyx, YASU and Disk Warrior and most of TechTool are useless except for their abilities to waste your time and make you feel better.

TechTool Pro is good for diagnosing hard drives before they fail and catching memory problems that elude the freeware. But, like the others, it is incapable of fixing anything.

Repair Permissions is still a good idea after software installs. Recent experiences with some application called... Oh... It'll come to me... Anyone heard of Digital Performer? Yes, repairing permissions is still a good idea. Although, in DP's case, I suspect the new license manager makes it less of an issue. Still...

Disk Warrior tells me when a drive is starting to have problems - the directories will begin to be corrupted. It's good for finding bad preference files. It doesn't fi anything. I have had it declare drives unrepairable that Disk Utility was able to restore.

Disk Utility can actually repair problem drives but when that happens, there's usually an underlying problem and the drive should be replaced. The one exception is a power failure - that can sometimes really screw up a good drive that, once repaired, will function for years.

I keep up with TTP so that I can take detailed pictures of the SMART status of drives. Disk Utility Pass lets problem drives last too long. I might renew DW if inexpensive for its diagnostic uses, not because I think it might fix or recover anything - it hasn't yet. Both utilities are useless with SSDs by the way. It's interesting to see the MicroMat copy trying to convince you to buy TTP while admitting that most of it either doesn't work or isn't needed with fusion and solid state drives.
