I have an 8pre (non-USB) and an 896 MkIII hybrid. I have it hooked up as an ADAT input source. There are trims that show up in Cue Mix, but they would be there for any ADAT source. Turning a trim pot on the 8pre does not affect the trim in Cue Mix.

I can use the DSP functions in the 896 MkIII on the 8pre ADAT inputs. Again, this has nothing to do with the 8pre as it is a function of the 896 ADAT inputs.

It would appear that the new 8pre USB is the same thing, but can be hooked up as a stand-alone interface via USB. I don't see any indication that DSP has been added to it, nor is there any indication that it has digital trims. Its best use seems to be as an expander converter for an existing system, which is fine for those that need more inputs.

Well, ok then. I stand corrected. Glad they did more than just put a USB port on it. Still don't see why they could not have added DSP FX on it at the same time. Maybe that would have made the 896 Hybrid redundant?

Not any more than it would have made the 896 HD (mkii, basically) redundant. The 896 is an 828+8pre, having both 8 preamps and 8 (10?) line inputs and 8 outputs. The 8pre only has 8 preamps and 2 outputs, no line inputs. If anyone thought the 896 was redundant, that would have had to have been cleared up years ago.

I still think it's redundant though: I'd rather have an 8pre AND 828 (and I do), split up the functions more in case one breaks.

It pisses me off that they treat the 8pre like the bastard stepchild all the time. It's a great little unit, in fact, it's probably the most applicable unit to those just beginning to build a solid setup. It's got more competition, but of the MOTU line, it's function is probably the most sought after. So why it's remained in the mkii range I have no idea. My only guess is that they're hedging bets that people will eventually get an 828 and make the 8pre's interfacing moot.

I don't mind that the 8pre doesn't have a larger DSP chip inboard; I'd rather it concentrate on being a great 8-channel mic pre/AD for rigs that can't afford a Grace m802 but want something more than a Presonus.
