It (3,1 or better) does seem to be a very nice level of CPU power for what we do (and a whole lot more). What I find particularly helpful is how fast I can process movie files out of DP. Once MOTU fixes the export features to allow for referenced movies, it should go like gangbusters.

And that's the lowest level machine that boots in 64 bit. I imagine Frodo's new 12 core kicks butt big time.

Stephen, I upgraded my graphics card last year, too (one of my kids had a 5770 laying around unused and have it to me). Now using two 23" 1920x1080 LED displays.

Yeah, I'm over it. I've decided for this quarter to spend considerably less on a matched pair of small diaphragm condensers. There's no point in replacing this Mac now.

Actually the 1,1s do run Lion (10.7) but that is where it ends.

For some reason, mine won't. I don't deny that it *should*, but I'm more convinced that my 1,1 was a lemon that should have done a lot of things which it never did.

I was thinking about doing this upgrade but not sure if it will fit along with the PCIe-424 card.
From what I've been reading it looks like it won't.

Curious what you've been reading... unless you have other cards filling all the PCIe slots in your Mac, I'm not seeing where the issue would lie. I believe the 424 is a 1x card, so it should work in slots 3 or4, leaving slots 1 or 2 for the 5770. But, then again, I don't have a 3,1 or a PCIe-424.

That's what I'm not sure about it was a couple of days ago I was reading the article but it looks like the 5770 it so fat it covers up 2 slots.
I think I might retire the 2408/pci242 anyway I haven't used it since I installed 828km3.

But if you put it in Slot 1, I think there may be some extra room to accomodate...

I actually have a 5770in the slot where the graphics card is meant to go and it doesn't interfere with anything.

Same here - 3,1 and the 5770 card. All good.

Now add a SSD internal drive and ka-zam! sha-pow!

I have my 5770 in slot 1, which covers slots 1 & 2, and there is still room for my eSata card, and my FW/USB card

Since I've gone to DP8 the sequence windows doesn't redraw as smooth as it use to I'm hoping the 5770 card will fix that.

There are mondo redraw issues in DP8. Some screens (like the entire CW) don't redraw until you click back in them or dismiss the new window that has caused the problem. That's kind of major if you want to watch both a new window (MIDI, audio, mixer, etc.) as well as the bigger (or smaller) picture in the tracks, movie, and other windows.

I'm still hopeful that the next update will address GUI concerns for everyone and that 'getting a new graphics card' isn't as widely heard around here. IMO, you really shouldn't need a new card if DP is to be seen as a more "universal" DAW and, if a specific level of graphics display is required, it should be duly noted in the release information with the app.
