DPs MIDI automation is going to be limited to 128 steps. There are obvious places where a smoother transition is noticeable, volume, and filter sweeps are good examples. Volume is covered by an Aux track in the examples above, but filter sweeps will have to be done in MIDI, and you're back to 128 steps.
Again, it's a matter of how it's programmed. Some VI's use NRPN's and thus have much smoother stairsteps than MIDI. But stair stepping can be a problem on some instruments, especially a straight-tone like an electronic sound -- a sine wave or square wave, especially. Generally, for an instrument like VSL, the stair-stepping of MIDI expression is not audible, because there are so many factors at work on the sound. When using continuous data on a VI, I often put the data in a separate folder. For NRPN data, I have to give each data type its own track if I'm going to be doing any editing. But it's doable.

In the case of Logic, is it doing anything different from what DP does when you put the VIs in Instrument tracks in each sequence instead of a VI?
