No that OS 10.8.x allows you to rotate backup drives automatically, I use SD! for new installs in the schools only (to make every desk the same) and have no other use for it.
OK,so you trust and use Time Machine to back up your data & you don't trust SD or CCC for this & other users don't trust or use Time Machine after having problems with it.
This shouldn't be so complicated and it's a bit perplexing IMO that opinions on this seem to reflect bad experiences each user seems to have had with any of the apps.
I arranged a advance replacement for my drive from WD,are you saying I can get the drive ,return the bad drive and they can then say it didn't meet their requirements under the warranty to be replaced, after all of this transpires?

I've found Time Machine reliable. The only issues I've experienced have been when updating to a new OS (not incremental updates, just from Leo to SL and then to ML).
As covered elsewhere on the board, when I make that kind of jump, I start a new, fresh Time Machine drive (currently two 2TB internal drives sharing the load). Easy sneezy!

How did you get that from my post?
I currently maintain over 30 Mac systems and a few PCs, about 10 Time Machines and other servers. There are multiple sites and I can't depend on people doing anything that requires manual backups. HD failure happens.
None of my clients has lost data in over 10 years. Including my Mac+ in 1986, my machines have suffered some data loss three times due to HD failure and manual backups recovered most data even then.
But since you brought it up, I've been dealing with HD warranties for over 25 years. I never realized that before - that 20MB drive cost me $1,000 back then and didn't last a year.
WD's policy, generally, is no questions asked. I have never run into an exception.
Seagate, OTOH, will disqualify an RMA if their testing doesn't agree. They want you to run their diagnostic first and it is PC only. I have had them return defective drives claiming no problems. Including the S.M.A.R.T. graph with a return put an end to that.
I no longer buy Seagate but still have a few in the field covered by their 5 year warranty. This is the replacement that I got for the 2T drive I sent in last August. It is in rotation as one of my TM drives but in a well cooled housing, not a Time Capsule. If I sent this in under warranty, it would be kicked right back. TM is not showing errors nor is it making strange noises but, the second it does, this will go out of service - if still under warranty, it will be returned.

OK now I think I understand this a little better so the way to do this is dl ML 10.82 and install, then use SuperDuper to clone the newer files the clone doesn't have yet from the boot.
Frank I was also a bit perplexed at Shirt pockets response,it seems a bit unintuitive.
This might be a dumb question, how do I install ML on a drive other than the Mac boot drive? Is there an option to install the dl to another drive besides the boot drive? I've never noticed, one way or the other.
I like the old way of having a OS startup disc this stuff is a bit confusing to me.
Question for the TimeMachine users (I'm going to set up a TM drive) do users set it to back up all of the time and just leave the drive running 24/7?
Or do you set a schedule?
Thanks to MLC,Frodo,HC & Frank, this is starting to make a bit more sense.
kg, I was speaking to only replacing a drive with the same OS. If your clone is 10.7 and you want to upgrade a new or old drive to 10.8 you can either use Mjgration assistant of copy or reinstall the third party apps. When you say "install on another drive" do you mean another physical drive or a volume or partition on the same physical drive?

Well I feel like we're in the middle of what's on 2nd & who's on 1st!
the 1st drive failed after wiping(10.68) and I was going to reinstall data & setup as a new clone of my updated boot drive now 10.82
Now what I will be attempting is to make a bootable clone on a new fresh drive.
So I think the way I'm going to proceed once I get the replacement drive is install MLion 10.82 on the drive, which will install the OS & the recovery partition & it will be bootable.
Then I will use SuperDuper to copy all the data on the boot drive to the new backup drive.
In the meantime I'm setting up another drive as a time machine drive,so I will have a clone and a TM drive to backup the boot.

I have been leaving Time Machine running doing its own scheduled backups. Have yet to notice any impact on my workflow, other than an occasional happy thought: "Oh! Time Machine is up-to-date already."
But I still manually backup projects in progress religiously.
