I dropped the Waves stuff a while back, so I'm not familiar with the L3, but have you checked all of UAD's offerings? They are pretty good about giving you an extension of the trial period if you tell them you're shopping around. I seem to remember a precision limiter in their stuff.
I tend to use Ozone's limiter (also does nice dithering), but that's a hefty package if all you're looking for is limiting.
Good luck on your quest.
Phil

I'd say: Stop searching and buy the L3. There is nothing like it as you know yourself. Couldn't think working without them myself. Just my 2 cents.

That may indeed be the (non)solution. All this research and shootouts has actually sold me even more on the L3 - the thing is bulletproof! Waves has bugged me as a company for a long time so I was hoping to be rid of them, but I may end up re-buying or upgrading or WUPing or whatever the cheapest way is to get just this one plugin.
…I did try the Precision Limiter Phil. It didn't sound as good as the L3 to my ear. I might give the latest Izotope contender again before I give in to Waves, but the last version I tried a while back didn't impress me much.
Thanks

Best price always. Bought most of mine there. Also cheaper WUP. Tony Belmont is great dealing with.

I was the champion of the L3 MultiMaximizer around here for years. Then I started finding situations in which I was getting some inexplicable "fuzz" in the sound when I used the L3. I ended up using the Slate FG-X and loving it. Incidentally, I use it with J-Bridge in DP8 64 bit, so there's no excuse to avoid 64 bits just because of Slate's laziness. J-Bridge comes through.
So, what was the fuzz in the sound? It turns out to have been a faulty monitor. I had just bought new ones, so I sent the faulty one back, and all the fuzz went away. The L3 is back in good graces again, plus I have the Slate FG-X. How could I ask for anything more?
By the way, NOTHING works the way the L3 MultiMaximizer works. It's just a different approach, and nobody else does it that I know of. So, keep the L3. Don't give up on Waves for arbitrary reasons when they provide the best stuff out there.
But treat yourself to the Slate FG-X, too. I absolutely love BOTH of those compressors, and both were created by people who think outside of the box.
