Deleting the DL_Store files should not be a problem.
Can you start from a SL DVD, use diskutility to add a partition to the drive, and then install SL on the new partition? I know most people are reluctant to try adding partitions for fear of erasing the disk, but I've done it twice now under SL and it worked both times with no problem.

I've had no problem adding or deleting partitions with Disk Utility in SL, Lion and Mt Lion. The best way to add a partition on a startup disk is to clone the drive (I use Super Duper) to another disk then restore the startup volume from the clone. This defragments the startup volume and places files together at the center of the disk. I run Diskwarrior at this point while booted from the clone. Then create new partition(s) using DU. Deleting a partition is a simple matter using DU, but you will lose the data in the partition. On data drives, I have used DU to create/delete partitions without going through the cloning process. Backups of everything before starting, you never know when you might click on the - instead of the intended +

Thanks. Both insightful posts.
Currently I have both running but in SL many Apps don't run like Mail, not that I care because PS CS2 survived.

Took the plunge today.
WORKING: DP8, FInale, Quickkeys, Quicken (update).
Whew!
I'm liking the slickness of the GUI and speed. The stuff I thought I wouldn't like isn't as bad as i thought it would be.
So why did I update? SL boot problems, mostly, and a few other errors. BTW, after the d/l of the ML software I chose to install on an empty 500GB drive and migrate ALL from my Time Machine backup since the issues I was experiencing were system related. So far only a couple of apps requested re-authorization, including DP. No big deal.
Having my DP projects, video, sound effects, and VIs all on separate internal drives made the process much less painful than in the past. So far, so good.
Thanks to all participating in this thread. It helped.

Wow!?
Am I reading correctly, you updated to ML? without a crisis?
I'm thinking about finally adding a drive for Time Machine.
MLC you're saying you installed 10.8 on a new drive then migrated everything from your time machine drive through migrating the apps on the 10.68 boot drive and most things stayed operational and intact?
And most authorizations held?
I didn't know you can migrate apps from a boot drive running on an older OS to a new drive with a newer OS and make this into a new boot drive!
Am I understanding this correctly?
Thanks,
You might of given me the best reason to finally use Time Machine.

Well, there is no BAD reason to use TimeMachine and yes, I install ML from the Apple d/l (App Store). It took about 30-45 minutes on a 16mbs fibre-optic line. At install, it asked if I wanted to copy info from another drive and I turned on the Time Machine drive. It appeared after a few seconds and I migrated ALL my apps. Everything seems to be working fine. A little sluggish at first and i suspect the caches are filling up. After a few minutes things started breezing along and a few apps are asking to be updated (like Toast, Flash). MS Office also wanted to be reauthorized, BTW.
Just starting to dig in but not much time for that. I'm actually mid-project! Yeah, never upgrade mid project - unless your boot drive starts acting wonky. I can still go back to SL on the old drive but doubt I will. I really didn't want to abandon all my fun Mac stuff and seriously, how long will it be before we read the words "Digital Performer requires Lion or better to operate."
I'm pretty happy with the change - some fun stuff.

I tried to find a bug with an afro but all the google searches came up with was James Levine.

But isn't that a common reaction many people have when the read MLC's posts with any avatar?

Dunno about the finder, but in Terminal, uname -a will till you what kernel you're running. Or you can look at the kernel task in activity monitor
